Prophecy in Theory and Practice, Tuesday Second Period (10/09)

Tuesday, October 9, Second Period

The ususal breakfast goodies were laid out on the table. Additionally the seating was all arranged into pairs, with a table holding a small pot and two cups next to each pair.

"Today's class discussion is on the topic of scam artists and prediction. I'd like to hear your opinions on some of the following questions:

-Does charging money for telling fortunes affect the validity of a prediction?
-Do fortune-teller con artists harm the reputation of "real" seers?
-How can legitimate prophets and seers counteract the public perception of fortune-tellers as cons?"

Once the discussion was over, Aziraphale gave a brief lecture and presented some handouts on tea (and coffee) reading.

"Your in-class activity today is to read tea leaves or coffee grounds for yourself or -- preferably -- for a classmate. You may also want to get in some practice outside of class, as we will be using today's activity as the basis for a special project in a few weeks."

[ooc: Please wait for the OCD is up and class is in session.]

Chris took a seat and waited to see if anyone would join him.

"Hi, Chris," Annette said as she approached him. "Would you want to partner up with me for this?"

Re: Tea Reading Exercise

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sure, Annette," Chris said, smiling at her. "How's everything going?"

"It's going great actually, thanks," she said, returning his smile as she sat down across from him. "How have you been?"

"Can't complain," Chris said. "Did you and Dick go to the Homecoming dance?"

Re: Tea Reading Exercise

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Her eyes lit up. "Oh, we did! And we had the best time ever. Kind of sad thinking it was our first and last Homecoming together. Did you go? I don't remember seeing you there."

"I'm glad you guys had fun," Chris said. "I skipped the dance. I checked out the carnival though."

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"The carnival was great too, though Dick and I came to the conclusion that the Tunnel of Love wasn't what is was cracked up to be. We were kind of bored and had to entertain ourselves."

"I really don't need to know," Chris assured her. "I just kind of hung out and people watched and caught up with my mom."

Annette blinked. "Ohmigod no, I don't mean, I mean not like that Chris!" Her cheeks flamed. She tended to do this sort of thing, a lot.

She cleared her throat. "Um. Your mom? But... Did I miss Parents Weekend and mine just decided not to show?" Cause that would be great.

Chris blushed too. "Oh, no, um, my mom graduated from here a couple of years ago," he explained. "Well, an AU version of her at least."

Annette was such a dork.

"Ah, I get the AU version thing. Lots of that around here. I've been very lucky in that regard and know no one from back home here. I don't think I would like to either. So, um, how was she, your mom? Wyatt visit with her too?"

"Yep, we all hung out," Chris said. "It was cool."

"That sounds nice, Chris. I hope my parents will be cool when they come down," though it was very unlikely. Maybe she could hide that week.

"So, would you like to read some tea leaves for me?"

"Okay," Chris said, alternately looking at the handout and peering into her cup. After a minute or so, he was ready with her reading.

"When the voices in your head get too loud, do something with your hands.

Paint a shelf.
Build a sand castle.
Bake a cake.

Get busy and make something beautiful."

[totally ganked from that website linked above :)]

Lana looked at her cup of tea a bit glumly. She really wasn't sure she wanted to know what it had to say.

Andrew was sipping his tea slowly. No need to rush the future, right?

Eve sat in her chair, sipping a cup of coffee, because how often did you get to drink coffee in class.

She wouldn't mind if someone joined her, though.

"Were you interested in a partner?" Lana asked a little shyly.

Re: Tea Reading Exercise

[identity profile] blackmagic-eve.livejournal.com 2007-10-10 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hey, Lana." Eve smiled. "Yeah, sure. A partner would be great. This stuff's not as fun on your own, anyway."

Re: Tea Reading Exercise

[identity profile] lovelylana.livejournal.com 2007-10-10 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"Definitely not," Lana agreed. "Have you ever tried this before?"

Re: Tea Reading Exercise

[identity profile] blackmagic-eve.livejournal.com 2007-10-10 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"When I was younger," Eve said. "I was raised around magic, so this sort of stuff isn't exactly foreign even if it's not magical. But I was never really very good at it. Used to read the Coven Elders' tea leaves and predict their deaths." She shrugged. "Hey, they didn't like me. Maybe that colored my perceptions."

"I can see where they might not have been too happy about that," Lana said with a smile.

Anathema had a cup of tea for drinking and one for reading and was waiting for a partner.
