Prophecy in Theory and Practice, Tuesday Second Period (10/09)

Tuesday, October 9, Second Period

The ususal breakfast goodies were laid out on the table. Additionally the seating was all arranged into pairs, with a table holding a small pot and two cups next to each pair.

"Today's class discussion is on the topic of scam artists and prediction. I'd like to hear your opinions on some of the following questions:

-Does charging money for telling fortunes affect the validity of a prediction?
-Do fortune-teller con artists harm the reputation of "real" seers?
-How can legitimate prophets and seers counteract the public perception of fortune-tellers as cons?"

Once the discussion was over, Aziraphale gave a brief lecture and presented some handouts on tea (and coffee) reading.

"Your in-class activity today is to read tea leaves or coffee grounds for yourself or -- preferably -- for a classmate. You may also want to get in some practice outside of class, as we will be using today's activity as the basis for a special project in a few weeks."

[ooc: Please wait for the OCD is up and class is in session.]

Annette blinked. "Ohmigod no, I don't mean, I mean not like that Chris!" Her cheeks flamed. She tended to do this sort of thing, a lot.

She cleared her throat. "Um. Your mom? But... Did I miss Parents Weekend and mine just decided not to show?" Cause that would be great.

Chris blushed too. "Oh, no, um, my mom graduated from here a couple of years ago," he explained. "Well, an AU version of her at least."

Annette was such a dork.

"Ah, I get the AU version thing. Lots of that around here. I've been very lucky in that regard and know no one from back home here. I don't think I would like to either. So, um, how was she, your mom? Wyatt visit with her too?"

"Yep, we all hung out," Chris said. "It was cool."

"That sounds nice, Chris. I hope my parents will be cool when they come down," though it was very unlikely. Maybe she could hide that week.

"So, would you like to read some tea leaves for me?"

"Okay," Chris said, alternately looking at the handout and peering into her cup. After a minute or so, he was ready with her reading.

"When the voices in your head get too loud, do something with your hands.

Paint a shelf.
Build a sand castle.
Bake a cake.

Get busy and make something beautiful."

[totally ganked from that website linked above :)]

Annette sighed and prepared to listen, she even closed her eyes as he read. Then she blinked them open and grinned. "A sand castle. I can do that. I like that a lot."

Chris grinned. "Cool."

He held out his cup. "Okay, you wanna give it a whirl?"

"Okay, let's see how I do with the reading of tea leaves. I never knew this sort of thing even existed."

Annette looked over the handout and looked down in the cup. After a moment, she said, "This is the only life you get. Don't worry, don't feel sorry for yourself. Go out there and do something nice for you. You can always worry when you get back."

[yes, totally ganked from that site as well :D]

Chris nodded. "Fair enough," he said.

Annette looked over at him. "Are you worrying about anything, Chris?"

"A friend of mine," Chris admitted, his gaze shifting to Lana and back.

She followed his gaze. "Oh, I'm sorry. Is she okay? I'd heard... awhile back that Jim left."

Re: Tea Reading Exercise

"She's having a rough time," Chris said. "I'm hoping that things will get better though."

Re: Tea Reading Exercise

"I hope so too, for her. She's lucky to have you..."

Re: Tea Reading Exercise

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Chris shrugged. "That's what friends do."

Re: Tea Reading Exercise

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
She smiled. "You're right."

Re: Tea Reading Exercise

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Chris smiled back. "I'm glad you and Dick got things worked out."

Re: Tea Reading Exercise

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Her smile fell a little. "Yes, me too. I just wish I can get past how I hurt him. I'm trying though and he is and has been, wonderful. I don't deserve him, really, but I'm glad he didn't leave me."

Re: Tea Reading Exercise

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Me too," Chris said. "I didn't really want to have to hurt him."

Re: Tea Reading Exercise

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"What do you mean?" she asked.

Re: Tea Reading Exercise

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Chris smirked. "I would have been happy to engage him in a little bit of fisticuffs if he had hurt you."

Re: Tea Reading Exercise

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
She smiled, blushing a little. "You're sweet, but you realize if he would have broken up with me, it would have been well deserved. Even now I keep bugging him about it and I should really stop."

Re: Tea Reading Exercise

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Details," Chris said. He didn't add that he was aware of Dick's friendship with Johnny and that would be the real reason he'd be happy to engage in a fight.

Re: Tea Reading Exercise

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
If Annette knew how Chris felt about Johnny, she would probably encourage him. Right now she didn't particularly care for Johnny Storm, or his big fat mouth.

"I keep bugging Dick about breaking up. There are trust issues here, paranoia, and I'd rather not have him stressing out about any of that - I'd rather deal with the hurt of a break up rather that knowing he was hurting by staying with me."
