Journalism Class - Thursday September 29

The screens in Spider’s classroom this morning are showing various scenes from around the school and school grounds. Various students are in the study hall, walking between the buildings, arguing, making out… just another average morning.

Spider’s desk is covered in maps and there are semi-transparent displays clustered around him as he rummages. Before the desk, on an easel, is the following notice.

Students:

Today we’re going to discuss the student election process because, to date, I haven’t seen any process at all. Do the candidates have stated public platforms yet? Have there been debates scheduled? Do we have a date for the elections themselves? What, exactly, are the duties and powers for the various positions?

Discuss and/or ferret out the answers.





((OOC: There will be a later post regarding tomorrow’s field trip. I have to go back and check who signed up to go and whether they all really have turned in their permission slips. I also have to go back and respond to students in yesterday’s class because last night got a little out of hand so I didn’t get back to that – and my deepest apologies.))

"Well...one of the things I'm going to do is either by way of the radio, or the paper or something, I'm going to keep everyone aware of the changes and decisions being made within the student government. I know that a lot of my classmates feel like student politics don't have anything to do with them, when really, it's all about them. So I'm going to try to keep everyone updated, and get them more involved."

She grins mischievously. "Also, due to a few requests, I'm starting up a completely safe dating service, because there are so many people here who are too shy to ask anyone out on their own."

Beka grins back. "Dating service. I like that. You should maybe talk to Inara Serra about that. She's really savvy when it comes to relationships and stuff."

"I definitely will, then," Rory says, making a note. "I'm absolutely going to need help with it, because...well...my own love life is confusing enough as it is, y'know?"

Coffee comes spluttering out of Beka's mouth as she laughs. "Who's isn't? Want to come to my room and talk about it? All the cool girls are doing it." It's clear she's not making fun, just laughing. "Rory, talk about your complicated love lives... at least yours isn't constantly being splashed all over the radio." Beka's grin could light the room.

"Not yet, anyway," Rory says, thinking of how much of her activities were already being broadcast. "And, well...if all the cool girls are doing it..." she says, grinning. "I always was bad with peer pressure."

That just makes Beka laugh harder. "Come on over, any time. Or just give me a call. I seem to have become sort of the unofficial 'I like this guy and he likes me but he also likes someone else or he doesn't like me or he kissed someone else or I hit someone because he kissed them or my boyfriend won't have sex with me' central switchboard. Probably because I've done most of them, except the hitting part."

Rory arches a brow. "I feel so functional after hearing all of that. Though," she adds, dropping her voice to a confidential tone, "I just finished dealing with one that's actually not on that list."

Beka crosses her arms under her chest. "Really? Do tell. Oh wait, is it the 'My boyfriend won't have sex with me so I screwed Angelus in the common room' problem? Wait, no. That's me. Sorry." She grins.

Rory laughs. "Nope. It's 'my boyfriend's mad at me because a guy with the same name as him kissed me as part of an assignment.'"

"Wow. That is a new one. You should definitely come over." Beka tries not to snicker. This conversation, begun as part of her personal campaign to rehabilitate the gunbunnies and show responsible and concerned student citizenship, has become fun. The irony of it, that she's actually doing what she was pretending to do, does not escape her.
