Journalism Class - Thursday September 29

The screens in Spider’s classroom this morning are showing various scenes from around the school and school grounds. Various students are in the study hall, walking between the buildings, arguing, making out… just another average morning.

Spider’s desk is covered in maps and there are semi-transparent displays clustered around him as he rummages. Before the desk, on an easel, is the following notice.

Students:

Today we’re going to discuss the student election process because, to date, I haven’t seen any process at all. Do the candidates have stated public platforms yet? Have there been debates scheduled? Do we have a date for the elections themselves? What, exactly, are the duties and powers for the various positions?

Discuss and/or ferret out the answers.





((OOC: There will be a later post regarding tomorrow’s field trip. I have to go back and check who signed up to go and whether they all really have turned in their permission slips. I also have to go back and respond to students in yesterday’s class because last night got a little out of hand so I didn’t get back to that – and my deepest apologies.))

"I don't really stay mad unless someone hurts someone I care about." She shrugs. "I'm not entirely sure we disagree, Chihaya. I don't want people who want to be unarmed to be afraid. I don't want anyone who has inherent lethality or magic or whatever to be persecuted or damaged. I just want to be able to be me. Like everyone else."

"Okay!" Chihaya said cheeruflly. He didn't want to talk about it anymore. It was a subject that made people unhappy and he didn't like people to be unhappy. "So, are you going to homecoming?"

Beka blinks at the change in topic, but smiles softly. "Yeah. Yeah I am." Her voice is also soft, warm.

"I haven't decided yet. I don't have a date, not that I need one," he said, flipping through his notebook. "I just don't know if I'll be here. It sounds like it's going to be fun though. I might try to stay and go, since I don't know many people here."

((He'll be chatty and annoyingly cheerful from here on out.))

"I didn't want to go. But then... well, I have a friend who likes to tease me. And I like to tease him. He started making jokes about me being Homecoming Queen and I decided that if he was going to nominate me, I'd have to find myself a date. So, I asked someone. Mostly I asked him to annoy this other friend." She smiles wryly. "I ended up finding someone I really care about, which is rather nice."

She cocks her head. "You should go. You'd have fun. And hopefully it'll be calm." She puts her hand on his desk face up. "And, promise, from me to you, if there's any kind of trouble, I've got your back."

"It's always nice when you find someone you really care about," he said softly. Chihaya would be lost without Kagetsuya.

Seeing her hand on his desk, he rested his hand on hers. "Thanks, Beka. That really does mean a lot to me."

"Is it nice?" she asks with a half-hearted shrug. "Mostly it seems to end up hurting."

She closes her fingers around his. "You're welcome. Do me a favor, Chihaya?"

"Sure!" He returned the gesture by grasping her hand.

His enthusiasm is contagious and it makes her smile. "Tell your friends, and anyone who is afraid that they should come talk to me. Tell them that I will protect them. With or without my weapons." She shrugs. "Tell them you met me and I'm not what they think I am. Please?" She wonders if he knows how infrequently she uses that word.

Giving her a gentle smile, he nodded quickly. "Sure, Beka. I can do that because you really are nice and you do care." His hand squeezed gently to emphasize. "I can tell."

"Thanks, Chihaya. I'm glad you can see that. I really don't want anyone to be afraid." Unless they try to hurt people like you.

"They won't be. They just need to talk to you and I can help!" Chihaya squeezed her hand again and let it go. A look at his watch and he squeaked. "I have to go work now." He grinned at her, gathering up his books. "Thanks for talking with me, Beka. I'll see you later."

He stood and almost walked away, turning to look at her again. "Thank you," he said and with a wave, zipped out the door to work.
