Study Hall, Monday

Kerrigan wasn't entirely sure how she kept getting roped into these things, but she entered the Study Hall room properly armed with donuts, coffee, painkillers and what appeared to be a day-old pizza.

And guns, of course. Just not particularly visible ones. It was a school environment, after all.

She sat down behind the desk, sagged, and prepared for a long and probably mostly unproductive day.

"I think that's a battle well worth surrendering for," Lee said. "The donuts probably played dirty anyway."

"They did the sweet and tempting tactic," River replied. "Hard to resist." She began licking the glazing off her fingers. "I got my speaceship repaired. Took it flying last weekend."

"Oh yeah?" He grinned and leaned forward on the desk, book forgotten. "How'd that go?"

"One spin around Earth," she said, trying not to let her enthusiasm show too clearly. "Didn't crash."

"Good to hear," Lee said. "Crashing's no good. Was your weekend okay?"

She looked away. "Had to go in search for myself," she said, picking up another donut. "You?"

"No searching," he said quietly. "Lost yours too? Get them back?"

"This morning. Quest all for nothing." She tried laughing. "Usual weekend oddness."

He smiled sympathetically and let his mind wander to those he'd talked to this weekend for a brief moment.

"I'm beginning to believe the weirdness is common here."

And his memories of certain people became all too clear to River. She dropped the donut. "Might not be as easy for you next time," she snapped.

"What?" That...was unexpected. "What won't be easy?"

"Oddities might me more trouble for you next time." She picked up the donut and glared at Lee. "Always is a next time."

"Yeah, I know," he said, sitting back. "I never said anything otherwise."

[Sorry about that. Had a training.]

"Didn't say you didn't. Just reminded you." She took another bite of the donut, not looking quite pleased. "Dangerous place."

[and I got stuck in a meeting and went to the cinema...]

"Thanks for the reminder," Lee said, frowning. "Any other warnings you feel the need to suddenly give me?"

"No. You seem to be capable of looking after yourself." She wasn't being fair, she knew that, and she liked Lee, but the surge of jealousy wouldn't stop. She dropped her head on to the table.

"Appreciate the vote of confidence," he said shortly. "Where'd all this come from? I do something wrong?"

"Yes." River decided it best not to elaborate, since she knew she was wrong. He hadn't done anything wrong, she was the one doing that.

"Enlighten me," Lee said, voice clipped. "Because I sure as frak don't remember and I kept all my memories."

"So have I." It was a poor attempt at changing the subject and River knew it, so she let her head rest on the table.

"Yeah, fine," he said and waved a hand. "That's fine."

River snorted, then wished she could disappear, part of her embarrassed by what her emotions led her to do. She slipped off the chair and hid underneath the table.
