Comparative Religions, Monday, Period 3, Class #3--Hellenic Polytheism

"Welcome to another fun-filled class," Vala grinned at her students once they were seated, hopefully with some popcorn and sodas from a table to the side of the room, "today we'll be learning about ancient Hellenic polytheism, which is the boring and textbook term for the religion of the Ancient Greeks. Like with the Egyptians, it was understood that there was a group of gods--twelve, in this case--who lived on Mount Olympus and generally spent their time either having sex, getting revenge on each other, or interfering in the lives of both observant and unobservant mortals. This will also be important later, since the Romans pretty much stole the pantheon and renamed them, using their belief in many gods as a basis for persecuting the early Christians."

"But I'm jumping ahead, and that will just make things more confusing."

"Luckily for us, we have some excellent resources here at the school--you might want to have a chat with Ares or Vice Principal Hades sometime, just to satisfy your curiosity, and I also found a movie that seems to depict the pettiness of the gods fairly accurately, so we'll be watching that. Later, if you're still awake, I'd like to know whether you would sleep with a guy who disguised himself as either a swan or a shower of gold, and if you would, what you expect your child to look like. Or, if you're more of a god frame of mind--why wouldn't you just pretend to be human?"

She slipped the DVD into the player and sat back with some popcorn to watch the movie.

Read the Handouts, talk, hang out, sleep, whatever

Adam browsed the handouts, intrigued by the Ancient Greeks.

Lana paid close attention and took a good many notes.

Karal started out taking notes, but he ended up just staring, open-mouthed, as Vala spoke. That was not how gods behaved; it couldn't be!

Although, if it was, he would have to rethink his certainty that Ares was not a god.

Adah's failing at trying to hide a small smirk as she made her usual marginal backwards notes on the handouts.

Or heckle it. Some of it's pretty hokey.

Lana watched, smiling at the hokiness.

Karal passed on the sodas, but he did nibble at a bit of popcorn while he watched the movie.

Where watching the movie was half-sinking down in his chair and avoiding looking at the screen.

Adah had a soda pop, but it didn't do her much good as she eventually had to set her head down on her desk, cradled in her arms, to rest her eyes a little. The ~~super-awesome~~ special effects of the film were causing too many clashes in the dead part of her brain and it was giving her a headache. She wasn't very good with films for too long.

Eve occasionally flung popcorn at the screen. What? The movie was cheesy as hell. How could she not?

Johnny tried to give the movie a fair shake, he really did. But by the time the third claymation monster tried to threaten the hero, he'd stopped trying to take it seriously, and was just laughing at the special effects and terrible dialogue.

Seriously, WTF Zeus, WTF?

"I definitely would not have relations with a swan," Z said firmly. "And a shower of gold is just gross, ew."

"I have to go with Z," Lana said. "Not with a swan definitely. And with a shower of gold... that just... doesn't seem possible even."

"..."

"..."

"...huh?"

Adah didn't intend to participate in the discussion; she would hope that, given her circumstances, she wasn't exactly expected to discuss anything. She was, however, paying rapt attention to her fellow classmates and making notes on their all-too-amusing reactions. But really? How was any of this any more absurd than Christianity?

"Why wouldn't you just pretend to be human?"

Seriously? A swan? What the Hell? Might as well pretend to be a snake or something equally ludicrous, instead. Sure, if it served the purpose, what did it really matter? But a swan?

Pretending to be human was good enough for Blackheart.

"I suppose nobody ever expects the... uh. Swan." ... "But how does that even work?"

Sam was underlining things in the handouts and making little notes in the margins.
