Library - Sunday

After yesterday's detention, all Lee really wants to do today sit, read and avoid any needles or robot guts or running. So, he's got a stack of books (randomly selected from the shelves), a bottle of water and a banana.

He hasn't started reading anything yet. Instead, he's scribbling some notes about something he had been reading before starting on anything new.

Anathema's hope for humanity had dropped a few more points. "It's across the ocean. We're the island country."

"I'm not from this planet," Lee said and shrugged. "Telling me across the ocean really doesn't help."

"Oh!" Anathema exclaimed. "I was beginning to worry for the education system. How did you wind up here?"

"Transferred," he said. "From Caprica. To expand my skills, I guess."

"I guess we're even now, because I have no idea where that is." Anathema replied. "Is your er, planet very different from here or I'd assume not since you look human."

"I'm human," he assured her. "And it's not that different. I mean, we have buildings, food, drinks but specifics seem to be different."

"And I thought I was coming from far away." Anathema said thoughtfully. "I'm guessing all the books are new to you then?"

"Every single one of them," Lee said, nodding. "I've been trying to read what I can when I can. Any reccommedations?"

Anathema rattled off a list of authors, the majority of whom had a tendency to be of the classical, romantic persuasion, though a few were historical books and a few were on witchcraft. "And I guess you can look at what people check-out and return."

"You did all that off the top of your head," Lee said and snickered. "Like books?"

Anathema shrugged. "You can find anything in a book."

"I'm learning that," he said and grinned. "How are you liking things...on this side of the ocean?"

"It's very fascinating." Anathema said eagerly. "My old school was horribly boring compared to this."

"Why'd you make the trip over here?"

"The Book said so." Anathema explained.

"Which book?"

"The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter." Anathema replied. "Nice means precise in this case."

"I have never heard of that book," Lee said. "Who's Agnes Nutter?"

"There's only one copy." Anathema pointed out. "And she was my ancestor and was burned as a witch." It would have been more accurate to point out that Agnes had been blown up more than burned, but Anathema didn't feel that that was relevant.

Lee's eyes widened. "They burned people for being witches?"

"They stopped." Anathema reassured him. "But they used to burn them, drown them, torture them, and in other ways make them dead or miserable." She paused. "Honestly, most of the people called witches were actually just women, and sometimes men, who had risen above their proper place in society. I'm sure a few were witches."

"And witches are bad?" Lee asked.

"I should hope not!" Anathema said, more than a little put out.

"Sorry," Lee said, holding up a hand. "Never met a witch before is all."

"I'm not a witch." Anathema corrected. "I'm an occultist." She smiled. "And I've never met anyone who wasn't from Earth." She paused. "I think."
