Library: Friday [21.09]

Karal stumbled into the library, half-asleep and clutching a leather satchel, which was stuffed full of papers. What he should have been carrying, considering how bleary-eyed he was, was a large cup of coffee.

Unfortunately all he had were the papers, and possibly a pen or two.

"You're not," he said, shaking his head. "I'm teasing. And it went...I don't think she expected me to say it. And she's having some difficulty, I think. She's not supposed to love anyone."

Karal gave him a small smile, then nodded as he asked, "Because of her future?"

"Yeah," he said, nodding. "Said it breaks all her rules and that it wasn't supposed to happen and to make it stop. But that was right after I said it and I think I caught her off guard."

Karal's eyes got very wide with surprise. "She wanted you to make it stop? I'm not sure such a thing is possible."

"It's not," Gavin said, having been unable to stop it. "I think...she's risking a lot by even admitting that she loved me. And I don't know if she was fighting with herself or something. I think it's just a really big thing for her."

"I agree, Gavin," he said seriously. "Completely. And more, I think if she is willing to risk it, well." Karal smiled warmly. "I think she must feel very strongly, and trust you a great deal."

He smiled then and said, "It was...it was nice to hear her say it back to me."

"I'm glad for you, and for her." Karal touched him briefly on the shoulder, feeling far better than he had. "And there is something it might be worth considering," he added thoughtfully. "If she is worrying over breaking the rules for Companions."

"Worth considering?" Gavin asked.

"As I was a Novice when I came here, she is not a Companion yet. Perhaps, it might make a difference, though," he smiled again, "it sounds as if it will not be necessary."

"Yeah," he said and smiled again. "She's very afraid she's going to hurt me."

Karal was slightly concerned about the same thing, but he didn't let it show. "Are you afraid she's going to?"

He shrugged and said, "Not really. But, I know there's always a chance. Just like there's always a chance I'll hurt her."

Which made him smile for an entirely different reason -- it was rare that people in love were so sensible. "And knowing that, it's far less likely to happen. I am so glad that it went well, Gavin."

"Hopefully it continues to go well," Gavin said, nodding.

"I believe it will." He had faith in both of them. "Did anything odd happen while I was gone? It feels strange, missing so much time here."

"Not that I can think of," Gavin said, shaking his head. "It was pretty quiet."

"Quiet is good," he said with a tiny sigh. "I'm actually very fond of quiet."

"How long are you back for?" Gavin asked. "Gotta go home again soon?"

"I return on Monday," he replied. "Quite likely every Monday from now on. Luckily Aravis is willing to care for Trenor."

"Have you slept?" Gavin asked. "At all? I don't mean naps either."

"I have! Last night." Though not well, and not long. "The problem is that Monday afternoon here takes me to Valdemar morning, and after one night there, I come back from their evening to Fandom's Thursday morning, so I lose two nights. But I did sleep last night."

"I promised Inara I'd check," Gavin said. "So, good. Sleep when you can."

"Please give her my thanks, but tell her there is no need to worry." He smiled and nudged Gavin lightly. "She should be worrying about you."

"Why?" Gavin feigned innocence as best he could. "No need to worry about me."
