Library: Friday [21.09]

Karal stumbled into the library, half-asleep and clutching a leather satchel, which was stuffed full of papers. What he should have been carrying, considering how bleary-eyed he was, was a large cup of coffee.

Unfortunately all he had were the papers, and possibly a pen or two.

Karal gave the Librarian's office a quick tidy, and then went back to the front desk.

Karal had his head propped on his hand and he'd found a cup of tea somewhere. It was so strong, it was threatening to eat through the cup.

"Hey Karal," Gavin said, coming up to lean against the counter. "Welcome back."

"Gavin!" He smiled brightly. It really was quite strong tea. "My thanks. It's very good to be back. Are you well?"

"Yep, I'm good," he said, nodding. "Trip home okay?"

"It was better than the last one, in any event," he replied after a few moment's consideration, smile fading. "And still not snowing, which is also good." He nodded at the spare chair. "Would you care to sit?"

"Sure," Gavin said, coming behind the counter and dropping into the seat. "And that's good. No mage storms?"

"They grow worse, but the breakwater still holds." Karal folded his hands and didn't add that it would only do so for at most another six months. Instead, he asked, a little tentatively, aware he was being nosy, "How are you and Inara?"

He grinned and said, "We're fine." And then waited to see if Karal would just outright ask.

Karal made a face at Gavin, but it was at least partly composed of a grin.

Normally, he wouldn't have asked, but he kind of wanted to hear something happy, and if Gavin's grin was anything to go by, it wouldn't be bad news. "Did you tell her?"

Karal is absent, off in class, but the library is always watching.

No messing with the books.

He's back, sitting at the desk and studying, rather regretting the strength of the tea he had this morning.

The library is closed to all but other aides, the Librarian, and anyone that might be invited to have lunch there.

Molly arrived just after the end of third period again and knocked for Karal to let her in. This time she was carrying a canvas bag.

Karal was deeply engrossed in his notes and he startled when the knock sounded, then smiled.

He was still smiling when he opened the door and stood back. "Molly, please, come in."

Molly smiled back at him as she walked in. "I brought lunch again. Are you hungry?"

Karal really wasn't hungry at all, his stomach complaining at him, but he ignored it. "I would like to share lunch with you," he replied, leaning in to kiss her cheek.

Molly grinned more at the kiss and reached for Karal's hand. "It's just sandwiches and fruit today and I forgot to get anything to drink so I hope you have water or something here, but I did remember to bring some cooked chicken for Altra." She looked around for the 'cat.

Karal took her hand, wrapping his fingers around hers. "Simple is good," he said. "But Altra is not here. He disappeared while I was in Valdemar and did not come back."

He kept his voice carefully neutral, hiding how much it bothered him.

"What?" Molly said in surprise. "Where would he have gone?"

"Maybe back to Karse, or to Solaris?" Or maybe he's gone, returned to Vkandis. He pushed that thought away. "I was speaking with him about the situation in Valdemar, and he went silent, like I've never seen him before, and then he leapt into the air and was gone."

Fourth Period [21.09]

Karal is still studying; this time his cup of tea is nice, soothing willowbark.

His arms are folded, his chin is resting on them, his eyes are closed, but Karal's not asleep.

Definitely not.

Perish the thought.

He's just...resting his eyes, is all.
