Library; Wedneday [ 09/12 ]

If there was anything in this world that might convince Adah to start walking upright and proper, she was thinking it would probably be this place. She'd done a quick tour around the library, collecting this book and that until she couldn't hold any more and couldn't keep going back and forth between the desk and the shelves without ending up a curled ball of pain on the floor. And since the Eel supposedly might slither in today, that would be no good. No good at all.

All at good, no. Good, no, be would that.

Carefully fortified at the desk behind armfuls of literature to attempt to catch up on, Adah feels she may have found her paradise.

Even if she was actually looking at a modern biology textbook, finding it even more interesting than the millions upon billions of pages of fiction she still had to go through.

Lee found his way into library sometime after his only class of the day, bag over one shoulder and book in his left hand.

Not being able to help himself, he took a long look around the library when he entered.

Adah had started reading the chapter on fungi backwards; she wanted to know more about a certain type, more than what they had given, and approaching it this way to discover something else was easier for her than getting up for another book. Her eyes shifted from the page slightly, though, spotting movement, spotting the Eel drifting toward the shelves and she hid her private little smile, slumped slightly in her chair as if to bury herself behind the book, as if, for some reason, that would be good enough to hide her, although she didn't terribly want to actually hide.

After scanning a few of the books on the nearest shelf (not that the authors or titles meant anything to him), he drifted closer to the main desk.

"Good book?" Lee asked in greeting as he approached.

The top of Adah's head bobbed a little in a nod. Her lips pressed together nervously as she tilted the book forward, turning it over to display a page on conidium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conidiophore), which she liked because of how it resembled a flower in a strange sort of way, appearing upside down to the Eel with how she held it. Present in the air at all times; they might be surrounded by conidophores right now and not even know it.

He found himself looking at the page even as he settled against the front of the desk, leaning a hip against it so he could face her but not crowd her.

"That's nice looking," he remarked because it was even if he wasn't sure what it was. "Looks like stars almost in the sky. How are you?"

Adah gave the Eel a wry, steady gaze as she drew the book back toward herself, pulling it in as she carefully closed it. She was thinking that she could show him anything, and, somehow, stars might be brought up. She set the biology book aside, leaned in easily toward the bag sitting on the floor on her left side, until she found her notebook, found a pen, and flopped it on the desk. She flipped to a blank page, and wrote.

"I am doing well. This library is absolutely incredible. Did you bring your book?"

He dug a pen out of his bag before dropping it near on the ground. Then, he placed the the book (http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Law_and_Mind:_The_Psychology_of_Legal_Practice) in front of her.

"Written by my grandfather," he wrote carefully. "My father let me borrow this and I...never gave it back."

...grandfather wrote it? Adah's eyes danced up toward the Eel for a moment to take a moment to marvel at him before dutifully marveling at the book. Her fingers, however, were already tracing over the spine. A small, slowly developing smirk at the comment about borrowing, at him in general, before she drew her eyes down and opened the top cover to start a quick overview of the text in front of her.

Law and Mind. Dnim dna wal. Not exactly her subject of interest, but perhaps the other things that interested her would be strong enough to carry her through it.

"Joseph Adama," he said, gesturing towards the name on the spine and inside cover. "That's my grandfather. It's not the most interesting subject matter but I usually take it with me whenever I move around."

He shrugged a shoulder. "I don't really know why but I do."

And then he picked up his pen and wrote, "It's yours for however long you'd like. First person not from my world to read a book from my world."

Adah slowly dragged her eyes away from the opened cover of the book to arch an eyebrow at the Eel for a moment, before finding her pen.

"With a preamble like that," she wrote, "I'm almost too tentative to take it with me."

Not that she would ever, ever lose a book, but it sounded like this one might have an especially notable importance.

He read her response and shook his head.

"No, no. I trust you," he said, nodding. "It's in good hands."

And he added a smiley face for no good reason.

There was a moment when Adah just read over his response slowly; the tilt of her head was almost bemused and, eventually, she wrote back.

"That is true; it is. Still, it feels unbalanced." And she couldn't have that, after all. "You will have to borrow one from me to hold as collateral."

He turned a little so he could put his arms on the desk and lean more comfortably.

"Okay." He tapped the pen against the desk for a brief moment before writing, "I'll borrow one from you if you pick it out for me. I don't know what to look for in books besides ones that have my name on the front cover."

At that, he made a face at himself.

With a small smile, Adah tilted, leaning her head against the desk as she lifted up the open cover of the book to peek at its face again. Adama. Amada. Almost a palindrome. A mad A! Even forwards, it broke up nicely...A mad, a eel....

She lifted her head from the desk with a small nod. "If you can wait," she wrote, "I'm tempted to give you my copy of the book I suggested last time. Almost one of my most read ones, but you can only borrow it if you don't mind notes in the margins, as there are a lot of them. Circled passages, unlined words. Typographical errors."

He returned the smile and watched what she wrote. And then he just smiled wider.

"I don't mind," he wrote. "And I can wait. I've never thought to write notes while I read before. Does it help?"

"It helps," Adah responded, "for the next time you read it. Or the first. No book is the same as the first time you read it; the notes help you remember what you've forgotten, or help point to things you may have missed before."

With another grin, he wrote, "You're very smart, you know. I'm learning a lot about things I hadn't ever expected to learn about."

Taking a moment to look at the response and think on it as she read it, Adah smiled lightly again. She wasn't used to being noted for her intelligence; usually, it was Leah, who could actually respond to it, that usually got it.

"I've been learning a lot, too," she wrote back, and, after a moment's pause, a small hesitation, she added, "Many things, also, pretty unexpected...."

"Unexpected?" Yeah, he pretty much agreed with that statement. A lot. "What kinds of things have you found unexpected?"

Adah's head ducked; another unexpected thing was her tendency to blush these days. She remembered when Leah had mentioned something like that happening with her and that ended up just being the warning symptoms of malaria. Adah hoped for the malaria.

She had to answer carefully. "The people," she wrote. "The people here are very unexpected; I did not at all expect them to be as they are..."

"Yeah, me either." He took a moment to chew on the top of his pen, some old habit coming back, before trying to catch her eye. Of course, having a pen in one's mouth while trying to do that didn't make for the suavest move.

"Can be a good thing and a bad thing, I think. There are people here that I really like being around and then there are others...well, they're others."

Adah tried her very hardest to not think about the pen exploding from the chewing, but her hardest wasn't good enough, and she risked being caught peeking up at him through her hair with a smirk on her face, before it ducked down again so she could watch the crook of her hand moving as she wrote more.

"I think a lot of them try to be too helpful..."

The smirk made him laugh quietly and he tapped the pen against the desk instead of chewing on it while she wrote.

"I can see that," he wrote, nodding once. "The only thing you need help with is getting me to stop coming around so much."

To prove he wasn't at all serious, he drew another smiley face, this time with a tongue sticking out. You know, very maturely.

Adah didn't need the sophisticate smiley face for the point to get across, and her head ducked again. This time, her hand accompanied it, wiping her mouth, of course, certainly not trying to stifle what might sound like a small laugh.

"You're wrong," she wrote. "I don't need help with anything."

Especially not that. But that would be left unsaid.
