Library; Wedneday [ 09/12 ]

If there was anything in this world that might convince Adah to start walking upright and proper, she was thinking it would probably be this place. She'd done a quick tour around the library, collecting this book and that until she couldn't hold any more and couldn't keep going back and forth between the desk and the shelves without ending up a curled ball of pain on the floor. And since the Eel supposedly might slither in today, that would be no good. No good at all.

All at good, no. Good, no, be would that.

The collecting and coveting of the books happens here; Adah still won't be difficult to catch as she limps with determination from shelf to shelf.

Carefully fortified at the desk behind armfuls of literature to attempt to catch up on, Adah feels she may have found her paradise.

Even if she was actually looking at a modern biology textbook, finding it even more interesting than the millions upon billions of pages of fiction she still had to go through.

Tapping a pen thoughtfully on the desk, Adah realized she's missing her Japanese class right now. She is trying to write a letter explaining to the teacher why, and if she will actually continue taking the class. Mobility between the library and the classroom was problematic. Maybe she'd have to talk to him about working something out.

Well, talk in a relative sense.

As Adah picked slowly at a sandwich, she marveled over how anyone could actually miss fufu, but the pallet was a strangely adaptable thing sometimes.

Forget how many stories she's missed in the last forty five years. Adah was discovering with fascination how many viruses had still been undiscovered.

Even if there aren't any fifth period classes; Adah wouldn't want to leave, anyway.

Posted up early for more chances to SP. Unfortunately, I'm going to bed very soonish, and then got stuck with working from 9;00 am to 6;00 pm tomorrow.

WRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRY?

On her way to Emma Frost's class, just after she'd eaten, River made a stop at the library. She didn't visit it that often, unsure now what to do with all the knowledge it contained that clung to her mind. The reason she stopped by today was more to visit the library aide, who should feel safe as there was to be no dancing in a library.

She entered quietly, the amount of books striking her with awe as usual.

While voices were expected to be quiet in a library, the same did not apply to minds, and there was a good chance that Adah shouldn't have read those biology books beforehand because now she was distracted, considering her food, and going through a litany of what possible diseases she might contract because of it. She loved the names of parasites; they didn't lend themselves easily to palindromes, but they were still lyrical, but unwieldy. But there was always Loa loa filariasis, Sis aira lif aol aol. Loa loa! Cadeau, Cadeau! African eye worm, a wonderfully, chillingly descriptive name.

No eye worms here in this sandwich. This world was much to sanitary. Adah didn't notice River coming in.

Libraries were never quiet to River. The books might not speak themselves, but minds certainly did, voicing the contents of books. Adah's poetry of parasites was different though, like Adah's mind generally was, to River at least. It drew River towards the desk, where she dug an apple out of her pocket - she had planned that gift - and held it close to her ear. "No worms in here either," she said, listening for a moment. She placed the fruit in front of Adah, pushing it closer with the tip of her finger.

Adah looked up, blinking in surprise because she really had entirely missed River coming into the library, and she stared, just a little bit, while her brain worked hard to shift gears. Of course there weren't; the apples here were too unnatural, and they tasted too heavily of things that killed what would try to kill us if given half the chance. But she liked fruit better than sandwiches; she'd grown too unaccustomed to meat that wasn't stringy chicken, so she gave River a light smile and a thought of thanks as the fingers of her left hand crept along the desk, twitching out to pull the apple slowly from where River started to push. She grinned a little wryly.

The insufferable arrogance of human beings to think that Nature was made solely for their benefit, as if it was conceivable that the sun had been set afire merely to ripen men's apples and head their cabbages.

Cabbages, their head, and apples, men's ripen to merely afire...

Lee found his way into library sometime after his only class of the day, bag over one shoulder and book in his left hand.

Not being able to help himself, he took a long look around the library when he entered.

Adah had started reading the chapter on fungi backwards; she wanted to know more about a certain type, more than what they had given, and approaching it this way to discover something else was easier for her than getting up for another book. Her eyes shifted from the page slightly, though, spotting movement, spotting the Eel drifting toward the shelves and she hid her private little smile, slumped slightly in her chair as if to bury herself behind the book, as if, for some reason, that would be good enough to hide her, although she didn't terribly want to actually hide.

"If it was the pesticides would be unnecessary," River observed. "Pestilence being a point of perspective." A thought of Miranda flashed into her mind. Violence fought with poison creating more death and violence. She pushed the apple into Adah's hand. At least they both appreciated fresh fruit. "Hard to find apples on a spaceship," she said.

Nearly impossible to get them where she was in Africa, although there were substitutes, so Adah imagined that, yes, a spaceship might have been different. She looked the fruit over, inspected it for soft spots and holes more out of habit than anything else, certainly not distrusting River's assessment. Just habitual, as humans were wont to be. She thanked River again with a bob of her head, before sinking a careful bite into it. She found herself wondering where she'd gotten it; it tasted better than the one she'd had last night.

After scanning a few of the books on the nearest shelf (not that the authors or titles meant anything to him), he drifted closer to the main desk.

"Good book?" Lee asked in greeting as he approached.

River looked pleased. She was good at assessing the quality of fruit and proud of it. "The Perk serves a good apple cake," she said. "Not like fresh fruit, but a different quality." She took a step back. This was Adah's job, after all, and River's class would be starting soon.

The top of Adah's head bobbed a little in a nod. Her lips pressed together nervously as she tilted the book forward, turning it over to display a page on conidium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conidiophore), which she liked because of how it resembled a flower in a strange sort of way, appearing upside down to the Eel with how she held it. Present in the air at all times; they might be surrounded by conidophores right now and not even know it.

Adah's mother used to make apple cake at one point. Adah's mother used to make a lot of things; still did, but it wasn't the same. Ekac elppa, not even Rekcorc Ytteb, Congolese Angel Dream Mix Bricks. After inspecting the groove of her teeth that had torn the flesh of the apple a moment, Adah figured that perhaps she and River should do something like that one day. Walking was getting a little easier; there wouldn't be so many stairs, and she wanted to see more of the village, anyway. She just needed a good purpose to do so.

He found himself looking at the page even as he settled against the front of the desk, leaning a hip against it so he could face her but not crowd her.

"That's nice looking," he remarked because it was even if he wasn't sure what it was. "Looks like stars almost in the sky. How are you?"

River's face lit up and she smiled. "Can show you the cake and give a tour of the village," she offered. Perhaps Adah might even want to see the spaceship, but she decided not to mention that right now. And she didn't want to be late to Emma's class! Before slipping out of the door, River turned. "If you want. This weekend?"

Adah gave the Eel a wry, steady gaze as she drew the book back toward herself, pulling it in as she carefully closed it. She was thinking that she could show him anything, and, somehow, stars might be brought up. She set the biology book aside, leaned in easily toward the bag sitting on the floor on her left side, until she found her notebook, found a pen, and flopped it on the desk. She flipped to a blank page, and wrote.

"I am doing well. This library is absolutely incredible. Did you bring your book?"

Adah knew she didn't need to nod to let River know that she'd much prefer to spend time with her like that than their last endeavor, and she liked that, because movement was best preserved sometimes. However, that didn't stop her from smiling a little. Just a tad. A smidgen. Neg dims a data tsuj.

He dug a pen out of his bag before dropping it near on the ground. Then, he placed the the book (http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Law_and_Mind:_The_Psychology_of_Legal_Practice) in front of her.

"Written by my grandfather," he wrote carefully. "My father let me borrow this and I...never gave it back."

...grandfather wrote it? Adah's eyes danced up toward the Eel for a moment to take a moment to marvel at him before dutifully marveling at the book. Her fingers, however, were already tracing over the spine. A small, slowly developing smirk at the comment about borrowing, at him in general, before she drew her eyes down and opened the top cover to start a quick overview of the text in front of her.

Law and Mind. Dnim dna wal. Not exactly her subject of interest, but perhaps the other things that interested her would be strong enough to carry her through it.
