Mac made her way down to unlock the library, coffee in one hand, and laptop tucked under the other arm.

First day as a library aide, and she was just hoping today wasn't one of those days the books would decide to fly at people.

"I always kind of dreamed of having an actual library in my house when I was younger," Mac told him. "My parents never were the bookworm types, though."

"I grew up in the Cloister, and then lived in the Temple at Sunhame, which has the largest library in all of Karse." He grinned. "It was wonderful."

"Must've been," Mac said wistfully. "When it comes to getting hold of literary materials, I usually resort to the internet," she admitted. "But, having a paper-based library on hand, really is preferable."

Karal couldn't help a dubious glance at the computer. "The internet is very useful," he said diplomatically. "But there is something enjoyable about the feel of a book in your hands."

"There is," Mac agreed. "Plus, they can be a little more portable and less likely to break."

"We have no electricity in my world, so even if they were portable, it would be difficult to use. But this," he held up his book, "I can take anywhere."

"You have no electricity?" Mac stared a little. Obviously she knew some people around came from places like that, but it didn't stop her from being a little horrified at the idea of a place where you couldn't use computers.

"No, no electricity, or computers, or cars or televisions or telephones or skyscrapers," he said with a small smile. "We do have magic, and horses, though."

"Magic and horses make up for all that, huh?"

"When you have never known them? Perhaps. Everything here is so convenient, it will be hard to go back to," he searched for a simple example, "to telling time with water or candles."

"I know that's how I feel whenever we have a powercut," Mac said with a slight nod. "You said you're going back soon?"

"Tonight, yes, and I should go," he said reluctantly. "There are things I need to do before then."

Mac nodded. "Well, have a good trip," she said. "And enjoy the rest of the book, it's a good one."

"Thank you. Enjoy your first day in the library," he called as he headed out, waving over his shoulder.

Mac waved briefly and went back to rearranging books on the shelves.
