Library, Saturday [09/08]

Mac made her way down to unlock the library, coffee in one hand, and laptop tucked under the other arm.

First day as a library aide, and she was just hoping today wasn't one of those days the books would decide to fly at people.

Karal made a dash from the dorms to the library, looking a little worried. "Good morning," he called as he came in. "I was wondering, did you find a copy of The Hobbit The Halfling under the counter? I think I left it here when I closed up last night."

"Thank you. I am leaving tonight, and I wanted to take it with me." He moved behind the counter, leaning down to move some boxes and random books, and found it where he'd left it.

Sighing in relief, the book clutched to his chest, he stood up and smiled at her. "Yesterday was my first day. I was worried about getting everything locked up correctly and I forgot it."

"Not leaving your books behind is the first one," he said with a chuckle. "Otherwise it was quite pleasant. Quiet and so many books to read."

Karal still hadn't shaken off the wonder of that.

"I grew up in the Cloister, and then lived in the Temple at Sunhame, which has the largest library in all of Karse." He grinned. "It was wonderful."

Karal couldn't help a dubious glance at the computer. "The internet is very useful," he said diplomatically. "But there is something enjoyable about the feel of a book in your hands."

"We have no electricity in my world, so even if they were portable, it would be difficult to use. But this," he held up his book, "I can take anywhere."

"No, no electricity, or computers, or cars or televisions or telephones or skyscrapers," he said with a small smile. "We do have magic, and horses, though."

"When you have never known them? Perhaps. Everything here is so convenient, it will be hard to go back to," he searched for a simple example, "to telling time with water or candles."

"Tonight, yes, and I should go," he said reluctantly. "There are things I need to do before then."

"Thank you. Enjoy your first day in the library," he called as he headed out, waving over his shoulder.
