Library: Friday [07.09]

Karal had gotten the phone call last night, and he was a little nervous about being in charge of the library.

He was quite probably the only person ever to bring a stack of books with him to open it.

"I do not know, Molly." He looked down at their hands. "I did have some friends in Valdemar, Natoli and An'desha, but I am not permitted to tell anyone I am here, so they likely think I have just been avoiding them."

Molly tightened her hold on his hand slightly and hugged him with her other arm. "I'm sorry, my Karal. I wish you could tell them. I wish I could go with you. You will have to make Altra let you hug him."

"You can tell him that," Karal said lightly, leaning into her. "And it does not matter. Florian knows, I can go and spend time in Companion's Field with him until it is time to return."

"Which hopefully won't be long," Molly said with a nod. She sighed. "I'm going to miss you."

"And I you." He straightened and smiled. "But I am sure the most that will happen is I will sit through an interminable Council meeting, write endless dispatches to Her Radiance, about the situation in Valdemar and here, and then I will be sent back."

"I hope so," Molly said, smiling back.

So did Karal, very much, even as he doubted it would happen that way. Altra, and Vkandis, would not be bringing him back simply for that. But he just smiled and very lightly kissed her.

Molly's return kiss was just as light this time. "I should let you get back to work," she said.

"There is much to be done, and there are so many sections I have not yet looked at." He was beaming as he said that, very excited. "Glory, Molly, there are books here on subjects I have ever even heard of!"

Wow, he was cute.

"How big is the stack of books you've picked out to take home?" Molly teased. "Need me to carry them for you?"

"None yet," he said, blushing a little. "But I do not have to, because I get to spend every Friday here."

"Good point!" Molly said before giving him a look of speculation and letting go of his hand. "Time for you to work!"

She went around to the front of the desk and folded her hands on top of it. "Hi!" she said with a grin. "I was wondering if you could recommend a book."

He quickly covered a laugh, then put on his most solemn expression. "What sort of book are you interested in? Do you wish a tale, or would you prefer something from the reference section?"

Molly put one finger to her chin in a pretense of thought. "Well, my boyfriend is going to be gone part of this weekend so I think I'll need a distraction." She dropped her hand and grinned at him. "A tale, please."

"That seems very inconsiderate of him," Karal told her, and led the way to the fiction section. "Here there are adventures, and romance, and something called science fiction."

"Well, he has important responsibilities, so I don't mind. Even though I'll miss him while he's gone." Molly eyed the fiction section critically. "Have you read any of these yet? Do you have an author you could suggest?"

"I have not read many stories from this world," he admitted. "Actually, I have not read any." Karal didn't quite scuff his toe on the ground. "That will make this more difficult."

Molly grinned and took his hand. "Then let me recommend an author for you."

"That is backwards, but all right." He smiled and slipped his fingers through hers. "I will take it with me."

Molly smiled back and lead him over to the T's. "It doesn't matter that it's backwards. I didn't really need a book anyway." She searched the shelved briefly before pulling out a book and handing it to him. "The Halfling. My father read it to me when I was younger. It's a really famous fantasy book and there isn't any modern stuff in it so you won't need to worry about asking for explanations."

He freed his hand from hers so he could examine the book carefully. "There and back again," he murmured. "I like that, very much. I think I will enjoy this. I wish I could leave you The Tale of Gregori, but it is written in Karsite."

"How long is it?" she asked. "Maybe you could read it to me? Over time?" She looked back at the shelf and pulled off another book. "For now though, I will read The Halfling too, since there is another copy."

"Not as long as this." He led the way back to the desk, and turned, ready to sign them both out. "Perhaps a quarter the size? I would be happy to read it to you, if you would like me to."

"I would like that a lot," Molly said.

"Then I will do so." With only the tiniest face at the computer, he put his copy through the system, then held out his hand. "And you must give me your library card before you can have the book."
