Sarah Kerrigan stood in the middle of an empty Danger Shop, wearing a simplified version of the Ghost armor. She had a serious expression on her face.

"Hey, kids," she said, "Welcome to Alternative Tactics, which is a pretty poor grouping name for a bundle of skills and knowledge you're going to need on the battlefield when you don't have a large army at your back and the bad guys seem to be holding most of the cards. Situations where ingenuity, resource management, stealth and superior maneuvering can save the day."

"I'm Lieutenant Kerrigan; I'll be your instructor for the duration. We'll be working in the environment I'm most familiar with. You'll find, however, that a lot of these concepts and skills will be of use no matter where or how you're fighting."

The Shoppe environment gave way when Kerrigan activated the program. It reconfigured into the dry asphalt tundra of the Badlands. She was standing on the rooftop of some burned out shops, holding her weapon gently.

"For the time being, though... You'll need some Marine armor for the course, so pick whatever color you're feeling," she grinned, "And have a look around. Get a feel for the sim. I'll see you at the end."

She turned around to leave, but then paused. "Oh, and you've got guns," she noted, "Point and click. Don't be an idiot and shoot someone. It won't kill you, but I'd rather not waste your time and mine reactivating frozen suits." Smirking, she hopped onto the ground.

"Next order of business, though it won't be important for a while: SCVs (http://pics.livejournal.com/on_her_korhal/pic/000040w2). They're your basic worker drone. You can direct them to gather resources; there's also a panel on your armor that'll let you know if you've got enough to spawn your own units, but that's not important right now. Try working the SCV."

Listen, ask questions because Kerrigan's obviously not used to speaking in present-day Earth terminology yet, figure out the nifty Internet-capable note-taking PDA Kerrigan has installed in your suit.

Okay, that's when Rikku raised her hand. "Uh, what resources are we supposed to be getting, and what are we spawning, anyway?"

Kerrigan glanced over at Rikku, arms behind her back. "Resources can be anything you need to sustain and increase a battle force, depending on the environment," she explained, "In terms of this sim, we'll be concerned mostly with minerals. The spawning will come up later, so don't worry about it."

"Okay then," Rikku said, nodding. She ... okay, she didn't really follow that, or why you'd need minerals to fight an army, but ... that was probably gonna make more sense later. Right? Sure!

"Don't worry," Kerrigan said, "All will be explained when necessary."

"So, what happened here?" Billy asked. "Nuclear holocaust?"

Kerrigan eyed him, face unreadable. "No," she said, shortly, "Just people."

"You think nuclear holocausts aren't caused by people?" He immediately repented mouthing off about it. "Sorry. I get it."

Sokka fiddled with the panel, trying to figure it out. Hey, technology was still kinda new to him, okay?

He pushed what he thought was the right button, and hollered into the panel, "WE NEED MORE MINERALS!"

Kerrigan suddenly had a mental flashforward of the end of the course, and somehow it involved having the impression of a palm imprinted forever on her face. "You might want to try more buttons," she said. "There's nobody inside."

Sokka shrugged. "Aren't robots from the future supposed to be voice-controlled?"

He hit a few more buttons and got the device to spin around in a circle. "Stupid TV lied to me..." he muttered.
