Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Amazingly enough, this part of the lawn looked pretty clear. For the moment, at least.

"Because I know you," Anders said, his eyes narrowing slightly -- apparently a year and change hadn't been long enough to erode his instinctive urge to feel slightly competitive around Lee. "I can't believe I'm saying this, but it's actually good to have you back. Being the only Colonial around here was getting kinda lonely."

"You don't know me," Lee replied, tilting his head at Anders. "This is the first time I've met you. How are you a Colonial?"

"What the frak, how am I a Colonial? I was born in Delphi, and I lived on Caprica until I came here two years ago ~~except I totally didn't really~~," Anders responded instantly. His face fell a little. "You're not . . . so I guess you haven't seen Kara lately, have you?"

"No," he said, shaking his head and almost feeling bad for some reason. "Sorry. We've never met. How do you know who I am?"

"They didn't tell you much about this place, did they?" asked Anders. "There's . . . it's weird. Different versions of people, or people who should know each other but come from different points in time. You used to be here, or a version of you, and this jackass from last century Earth time who looked exactly like you except with long hair. Everybody had a thing about your arms," he added with a not-so-subtle eyeroll.

"My arms?" All right, that might have been a grin peeking out. He couldn't help it. "Good thing?"

There was the slight eyeroll again. "Lords, yes. All the frakking time, people swooning over them," Anders said, though without rancor. Hey, fellow Colonials were hard to come by around here these days. He kind of felt obligated to at least try to be nice.

"Oh." He grinned again. "All right, anyway, so I used to go here? Or some other version of me went here you and you were friends with him?"

"Well," Anders hedged, "not exactly friends. Sort of, sometimes, I guess. Sort of rivals too. I guess you could say we had a history. It's good to not be the only person left here from our system any more, that's for damn sure."

"Yeah," Lee said, surprised to find himself meaning that about someone he'd just met. Speaking of that..."What's your name?"

"Anders." He held a hand out, a little weirded out that he was being so friendly. "Sam Anders~~, Cylon~~. Needless to say I know your name, but it's nice to meet this version of you."

"Anders," Lee repeated, shaking the offered hand. "Good to meet you, too. How long have you been here, anyway?"

"Two years, and wow, I can't believe that." Anders shook his head, looking a little more weirded out. "Don't worry, you get used to it, I promise."

"Two years?" Lee asked, shocked. "Have you been back at all?"

"Once, yeah, for a week or so. Had to go back and do my Pyramid tryouts for the League." Anders shrugged. "I know. You'd think I'd miss home more than I do, huh? But I've been here long enough that it feels more like home than, well, home does."

"Huh." He'd held hands with another guy, had been talked into taking his shirt off and been threatened into going to the gym this week and this was still the weirdest conversation he'd had. "I almost want to ask what the other me was like but I think I might be weirded out. More than I am."

Anders nodded knowingly. "Save some of the weirding out for another day, if you have to. Not that there's ever any shortage of it, but you don't want to get all overwhelmed when you just got here."

"Right." Lee nodded. Yeah, he'd wait on that. "They got a Pyramid court here?"

"Like I'd live without one," Anders scoffed. "It's kind of a hike, it's out by the cabins, but we've got one all right."

"You play by yourself?" Lee asked. "Can you even play Pyramid by yourself?"

"Not really." Anders's voice took on a distinctly grumpy note. "I mean, I try and practice, but it's not the same. Used to play a little bit with other you, and K -- another girl from the Colonies who was here for a while. I've taught a few people the basics, but where's the challenge there?"

"Well." Stupid competitive streak. First the hand holding and now this. "I'd play you."

And be better than the other him.

When a competitive streak meets a competitive streak, what happens? Stay tuned.

"You're on," Anders said, slapping his hand against the ball for emphasis.

Better than the other him or not, Anders was still going to kick his ass. He hoped.

"Good." And Lee was already feeling better. Pyramid was familiar, something from home and winning...well, that was familiar too. "Been awhile since I played. Hope I don't make it too easy on you."

"We'll see about that," Anders said with that tiny hint-of-a-smirk that any athlete worth his salt learned to do in Trash-Talking 101. "Be good to have someone to play with again."
