Pie for Beginners - Week 4 - Monday 2nd period

Yondaime was back in class today, looking chipper and friendly as usual. “Hello everyone! Good morning! I’m sorry for my absence last week, but I was undeniably delayed due to an overly…. insistent relative at home. I hope that Professor Deadpool was able to help everyone with last weeks topic but if there were any problems please see me and we’ll work them out.”

He reached down to the floor and picked up a large bushel of apples, a small basket of berries, and another of peaches. “So this week we’re doing fruit pie fillings. I have apples, berries and peaches for you to choose from but of course just about any fruit can be made into a filling. The recipes and ingredients needed for the fillings you will find on your tables a long with pre-made frozen pie crusts. We’re using pre-made crusts for these lessons just because it would take too long to do the filling and crust in one class. Deadpool mentioned to me that some of you objected, to them before but if you wish you may make several crusts to use for the various classes to bring in.” He picked up an apple and tossed it back and forth in his hands.

“So barring the return of any puppets,” he paused, glancing around fearfully for a moment before continuing. “I’d like you all to work in partners, avoid certain dreaded words regarding crusts and we’ll see what kind of pies we can come up with by the end of class!”

Setsuna sorted through the apples and waited for Alphonse. Because it didn't even cross her mind that they wouldn't pair up for this one. They had to. Yup.

Wasn't she lucky, then; Setsuna was the first person he turned to once the lecture was over with a beaming look on his face.

"We cannot mess up on this one," Setsuna told him as if he didn't realize it, grinning. "We'll have to be extra careful. I'd feel just terrible if I messed up on apple pie around you." She gave him a light nudge with her elbow.

"Mm-hmm, no messing up," Alphonse replied in mock demand, moving slightly from the nudge.

"I'll get to peeling the apples," Setsuna offered; she didn't feel it needed to be said that she'd have it done in a significantly quicker time than just about anyone else in the room, excepting perhaps Yondaime-sensei.

"Hmm," Alphonse looked down thoughtfully at their pie-making materials. "Right. I'll get the other oh so handwavey things done while you do that."

Setsuna nodded. "Right," and, arming herself with the apple peeler, took in a deep breath, centred her chi, and, with a completely overdone display of how big of a dork she was, set about peeling the apples in a flurry of expertise.

Anemone grabbed some peaches and looked around for a pie-buddy.

Will waved over Anemone.

"Hey! Do you have a partner yet?"

"Nope!" Anemone tossed one of her peaches in the air and grinned. "Care to slaughter some defenseless fruit with me?"

Will grabbed a handful and a half of mixed berries and headed over to join Anemone.

"I'd love to! They probably deserve the punishment they're going to get for the crime of being too delicious."

"Tasty-ness is a crime punishable by death." Anemone nodded and looked around for directions. "I've got no idea how to do this. You?"

"I've never actually done this before," Will admitted, "but I'd imagine that all you'd have to do is wash the fruit, cut it up into bite-sized pieces, and dump those in a pie shell. Shouldn't be too hard to do."

Raph wondered if it'd be all right to do more than one type of fruit. Just one kind seemed like it'd make a really boring pie. Maybe peaches and apples would work? They were sort of alike, right? So, that'd probably work out ok. Or maybe Berries and apples? Berries and Peaches?

Either way, he seemed more concerned about pondering this than he did about actually finding a partner.

Apples! Evie was having fun slicing them up. With only the occasional cut on her fingers.

"Would you like to burn a pie together?" Door asks with a grin and the promise of an exceptionally long delay between tags.

"Sure!" Evie giggled, and held up a knife, waving it in what was not meant to be a threatening manner. "My last one came out under-done. Not at all--" She looked around for puppets. "Tender or flakey. So there should be variety in how it fails."

"My last one was flakey... if you count tiny bits of charcoal as flakes," Door answers. "Wee, tiny black flakes."

"Cajun pie?" Evie offered as a possibility. "Sokka makes Cajun stuff. Sometimes." She took a bite of apple, pursed her lips, then gulped. "I think it needs more sugar. Or something."

Door tastes it, then nods. "Unless we want to make tart pie." She giggles. "Which makes me think it should have rude cutouts in the crust or something."

Evie's eyes get rounder, and then she chortles too, turning pink. "Would we receive a better or worse grade for that? And we'd have to eat it before anyone else saw it." She blinks. "Hmmm." Then giggles again, before sprinkling the apples with more cinnamon.

Peaches weren't very easy to come by in the Prince Edward Island of Anne's time -- the tiny Maritimes island didn't have the climate for them -- so of course she had to take up the challenge and try her hand at a peach pie.

While waiting for a partner, she busied herself making the dough for the best, flakiest, butteriest pie crust that she was capable of making.
