Dealing with the Opposite Sex, Friday, Period 2, Class #3

"Today, we learn about flirting," Vala told the class as they entered, bouncing a little. "It's a surprisingly useful skill, and valuable in both professional and personal contexts. The problem is how to get good at it--it's innate for some," she smirked over at Jack, "but others of you will have to work at it."

"Unfortunately, the only way to get good at flirting is to practice--so that's what I want you to do today, with as many people from the class as possible. Remember that it should be light and fun and teasing. If you can't breeze your way through a conversation, you'd be amazed how far some good old fashioned interest can get you."

"Oh, and if I hear one bad pick-up line, you have to go stand on your head in the corner."

He was also grinning at Vala, and biting his tongue to keep from asking her: 'If I said you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?'.

Vala did have a beautiful body, and had, in fact, already held it against him, but he wanted to see if she'd actually make him stand on his head in the corner.

Feel free to practice flirting on him.

There was a fl-word involved in what Jeff was doing, but it wasn't flirting. "What about accidental words?!" he flailed in Jack's general direction (mostly because he wasn't Vala, and hence, did not possess breasts), "What if there's a chain reaction?"

"Woah, woah, easy," Jack said in what was supposed to be a soothing manner. He was grinning, though, in his 'my, aren't you adorable' way, which might impact slightly on the soothingness. "Not quite sure what you mean by accidental words, but chain reactions can lead to a lot of fun."

"Be serious," Jeff said, following his own advice, "What if you go up to a person and you say something accidentally - like nipples, or thighs or something - and it escalates? One minute it's body parts, the next she's thinking you're an axe murderer with an interest in electromechanics, or, or you collect ears in a bucket or you're a frog academic with a specialty in lungs..."

"I was completely serious." He was also trying not to laugh. "Chain reaction, many people, lots and lots of fun. Are you likely to accidentally start naming body parts? Because I think the ear collecting might tend to kill the mood. Well, for most people. There was this one girl I met, she had very strange hobbies."

Jeff was having a hard time following this. Mostly because he was trying to picture it and coming up with some really terrifying mental images. "...Well, that's just the way it is, isn't it? Being a man, you can't help it. There's always body parts, and if you lose control, it's all ears, isn't it? Or breasts. Or bottoms." He paused in horror. "Oh, god," he said, "I've given myself arses."

Jack started to snicker. He just couldn't help it, and he peered around behind Jeff. "It's a nice arse, if that's any consolation." He had a feeling it wouldn't be. "I can honestly say I have never had that happen to me. Does this anatomical outpouring happen every time you start flirting?"

"And other times," Jeff said, looking somewhat frantic, "Worse if I've missed the nudity buffer."

"The nudity buffer?" he asked, beginning to wonder exactly what he'd been missing out on. And beginning to be just a wee bit concerned about Jeff. "Maybe you should take a couple of deep breaths."

"I've tried to increase the size of my nudity buffer," Jeff said, figuring that as an expert on these matters Jack would probably know about the buffer, "I'm at three minutes now; I imagine I should probably start looking into nipple type."

Nope, Jack had no clue what Jeff was talking about, but his imagination was leading him down some very entertaining paths. "Is the type of nipple important? Generally I find them all equally appealing, and Jeff?" He tried to be delicate. "Three minutes isn't very long."

Jo grinned at Jack. "What's a nice boy like you doing in a place like this?"

"I might be waiting for the right girl to come and save me," he replied, leaning forward and smiling at her innocently.

There might even be a bit of eyelash fluttering going on.

Jo was perfectly straight-faced, really. "You should be careful. Your virtue might be in danger."

"With you here to keep me safe?" He pressed one hand to his heart. "Never."

"It is a girl's duty to help keep a young man such as yourself's virtue safe," Jo sighed dramatically. "And such a taxing one too."

Jack bit back a laugh. "And you have my gratitude." He looked down demurely. No, really. Demurely. "Is there any way I could possibly thank you?"

"I could think of a few things," Jo said, rubbing her chin thoughtfully.

There was definitely eyelash fluttering going on now, and Jack rested his chin in his hands and looked up at her, wide-eyed and hopeful. "Really? Because I'd do anything to thank you."

Jo raised her eyebrows. "Anything?"

"Why, Jo," Jack fluttered his lashes again. "I'd almost think you had something in mind."

"It is the assignment," he replied, grinning at her. "But you can practice on me if you want. I'm sure Vala will understand."

Irulan flushed, "Oh, I didn't mean... if you really don't mind!"
