An Introduction to Mad Science

Once again, the danger room had been set up to look like a creepy lab. This time, tables and chairs had been moved into neat rows, facing a blackboard and a table at the front of the room. A pot of coffee simmered over a heater next to a small stack of styrofoam cups. A weird looking gun-type thing that seemed to be made out of kitchen appliances sat on the table at the front. Once the students had all taken their seats, Professor Tomoe spun to face the class, the usual dramatic lighting shadows in place.

"Good afternoon students!" he said cheerfully. "Today, I'm going to fill you in on the sort of experiments I specialize in, and what type of things we'll do this semester."

He drew a spiky star-like thing on the board and pointed to it. "This is a Pure Heart Crystal. Anyone with a bit of a goody-goody streak to them has one." He grinned excitedly. "But within three of these Pure Heart Crystals, are Talismans. When the three Talismans are found and brought together, they summon a being with enough power to destroy the world."

Here he let out a long, demented sounding laugh before abruptly cutting it off.

"But, the challenge with these is to get the crystals out of the host, preferably without killing them. If it's a dud, there's no reason to keep it. Over the course of this class, you're going to create a monster called a daimon, a type of creature designed to pull out Pure Heart Crystals in a non-lethal way."

He motioned to the gun-like thing. "And this is called a Heart Buster. It was built by one of my--" henchwomen "--assistants as a more direct method of removing Pure Heart Crystals. If anyone would like to see one, I would be more than happy to demonstrate."

He turned his attention back to the class. "Now then, please partner up with another student. I want you to give me a list of five ways you figure out who might be pure of heart enough to be one of the the talisman carriers." His red grin spread from ear to ear. "Surprise me with your creativity."

Ami thought about this Pure Heart business. And looked around for a partner.

"Hey, fellow cheerleader," Chad lifted a hand in a waveless wave as he drifted over toward Ami. 'Do you know five pure people?"

"Maybe?" Ami said thoughtfully. "Are we supposed to give names, or ways in which we would know if they were pure? And what sort of um, pure, does he mean anyway?" Ami blushed at that last one.

Which just made Chad think that, aww, he missed being around shy Asian kids. Of course, it was one of those times where you missed a certain thing because you weren't around (or dating) it anymore. But it was cute, really, that blushing.

"I think we just need to make a list," Chad said. "An' it's pure of heart, right? So that's not necessarily the same as pure of body."

"What abut pure of mind? Like never had bad thoughts, or something? Maybe it is the same thing... Hm."

Re: Find a partner

"I don't think a person like that could exist," Chad admitted. "Never have bad thoughts? That's, like, impossible."

"I think it may depend on what one means by bad thoughts..." Ami said, thoughtfully.

sorry was busy losing my job. woe

"Well, like..." Chad blinked, not sure how to explain. "Bad thoughts. Thought about hurting others and things..."

"Alright, so yes everyone has thought of that. But maybe someoen who has not thought of killing anyone? Or people who have never killed? Or people who have only killed in self-defense? Or..." Ami really had no idea what she was talking about. "Besides, how can we judge if someoen is pure of heart? Don't we then need to be pure of heart to judge?"

"There's more ways to hurt a person than just through violence, Ami," Chad noted. "And I don't think you need to be, no. People who've never touched a guitar in their life are always writing music critics..."

"I think I know someone who's pretty pure of heart. All this crystal stuff sounds pretty nasty, though, so I feel bad about mentioning her..."

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] slr-mercury.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hmm... yes. He mentioned the crystals get extracted." Ami said thoughtfully, looking at the crazy teacher "don't people need them?"

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"I wonder," Chad said, although he was pretty sure it didn't, because he thought he had this explained to him before, "if that's why Hollows are hollow..."

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] slr-mercury.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hollows?" Ami asked, now curious. "Why does that sound familiar?"

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"They're ghosts that eat people's souls," Chad said, then shook his head. "Zaraki made people fight 'em when he was here..." God, he was glad he never ended up running into that man again...

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] slr-mercury.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ah yes. I had to fight one of them. It was... an interesting experience."

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"I hate fighting them," Chad's shoulders slumped a little; there might have even been a pout. "But they do have those holes, y'know? So maybe that's where they got them from."

They so didn't. Chad knew this. He just...forgot.

"Huh. Maybe. So... back to this assignment..."

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh. Right. Pure of heart people...Orihime Inoue. Probably the purest heart ever." Chad nodded. He was sure of it; to a point where just thinking about it made him really, really miss her...

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] slr-mercury.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Ami wrote the name down carefully. "Alright that is one. I think... Aziraphaele is as well... he has to be"

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Chad nodded. "I don't really know him, but you don't know Orihime at all, so that works."

His head tilted. "Would it be too cheesy to think Ted's pure of heart?"

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] slr-mercury.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"Probably" Ami smiled. She was going to say Setsuna, but thought better of it. "Maybe Rikku? She seems all around very nice..."

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Chad gave an approving grunt. "She is all around nice, so yeah..."

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] slr-mercury.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"Alright so that is three. Who else?" Ami wrote down the third name.

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Chad thought for a moment or two.

"You sure we can't put down Teddy? 'Cause, really, he does. He puts up with me, and that says a lot..."

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] slr-mercury.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Ami grinned. "Well if you think he is pure of heart, then we can put him down" she wrote down Teddy's name. "Who else?"
