An Introduction to Mad Science

Once again, the danger room had been set up to look like a creepy lab. This time, tables and chairs had been moved into neat rows, facing a blackboard and a table at the front of the room. A pot of coffee simmered over a heater next to a small stack of styrofoam cups. A weird looking gun-type thing that seemed to be made out of kitchen appliances sat on the table at the front. Once the students had all taken their seats, Professor Tomoe spun to face the class, the usual dramatic lighting shadows in place.

"Good afternoon students!" he said cheerfully. "Today, I'm going to fill you in on the sort of experiments I specialize in, and what type of things we'll do this semester."

He drew a spiky star-like thing on the board and pointed to it. "This is a Pure Heart Crystal. Anyone with a bit of a goody-goody streak to them has one." He grinned excitedly. "But within three of these Pure Heart Crystals, are Talismans. When the three Talismans are found and brought together, they summon a being with enough power to destroy the world."

Here he let out a long, demented sounding laugh before abruptly cutting it off.

"But, the challenge with these is to get the crystals out of the host, preferably without killing them. If it's a dud, there's no reason to keep it. Over the course of this class, you're going to create a monster called a daimon, a type of creature designed to pull out Pure Heart Crystals in a non-lethal way."

He motioned to the gun-like thing. "And this is called a Heart Buster. It was built by one of my--" henchwomen "--assistants as a more direct method of removing Pure Heart Crystals. If anyone would like to see one, I would be more than happy to demonstrate."

He turned his attention back to the class. "Now then, please partner up with another student. I want you to give me a list of five ways you figure out who might be pure of heart enough to be one of the the talisman carriers." His red grin spread from ear to ear. "Surprise me with your creativity."

Pair up, and make a list of five victims hypothetical people who might be pure enough to have talismans.

Kabuto rifled through his stack of info cards, not sure if Professor Tomoe wanted a list of people from Fandom, or anyone at all. Because if it wasn't limited to the school, Kabuto already had five people.

Edward peered over Kabuto's shoulder. He might have been a little too far into Kabuto's personal space bubble. "What are those? Cigarette cards?"

"Info cards," Kabuto replied mildly. "I've made one for everyone I've met so far." He didn't remark on the personal space invasion. However, if Edward didn't move soon, he'd be finding a scalpel at his throat.

Edward would have enjoyed the choice of weapon, but he didn't have enough patience to find that out. He moved to a seat near Kabuto.
"What kind of information do you put on them?"

A handful of people readily came to mind, but Valentine wasn't all too keen on writing down names for a good grade today. It wasn't entirely far off from handing someone over for blood money, really, was it?
If asked for a list today, it was entirely possible that he'd throw out something good and random, like the names of monkeybirds he'd known.
"Bob, Bob, Bob, Bob, and Bob," he muttered to himself, almost amused at the notion. "Unless my partner has something better, that's where my list will stay."

"Hey, you're back," Donnie said, poking at Valentine with a smile.

It took Valentine a moment for it to sink in that he had been poked, and a moment more for him to realize that, oh, Donatello had been talking to him.
"Yes, I'm back," he said with something of a wry smile. "In more ways than one, I suppose."

"Welcome back then," he said. "Did your visit go okay?"

"For about three hours," he replied, frowning and looking off at the wall over there. Walls were interesting, really. "The rest..."
The rest ... yeah. Not so okay.

Don cocked his head, perceptive enough to realize that it was maybe not the best question. "Well, at least it's over, right?"

"It doesn't get any more 'over' than it is, really."

Valentine winced a little, himself. "Don't be. I think it was mostly my own fault. I... waited too long. I didn't trust her. I could have just handed it over, and I didn't, so everything went black."
He was well aware that he probably wasn't making the greatest sense at this point.

"Aah." Donnie gave Valentine a concerned look. "Still, it's nice to see you again."

Andrew drummed his fingers on the desk and looked about at his classmates. He didn't really know too many people at Fandom yet -- at least not well enough to classify them as 'pure of heart'. He's always been a fan of conjecture though...

"Hey, fellow cheerleader," Chad lifted a hand in a waveless wave as he drifted over toward Ami. 'Do you know five pure people?"

"Maybe?" Ami said thoughtfully. "Are we supposed to give names, or ways in which we would know if they were pure? And what sort of um, pure, does he mean anyway?" Ami blushed at that last one.

Which just made Chad think that, aww, he missed being around shy Asian kids. Of course, it was one of those times where you missed a certain thing because you weren't around (or dating) it anymore. But it was cute, really, that blushing.

"I think we just need to make a list," Chad said. "An' it's pure of heart, right? So that's not necessarily the same as pure of body."

"I don't think a person like that could exist," Chad admitted. "Never have bad thoughts? That's, like, impossible."

"Well, like..." Chad blinked, not sure how to explain. "Bad thoughts. Thought about hurting others and things..."

"Alright, so yes everyone has thought of that. But maybe someoen who has not thought of killing anyone? Or people who have never killed? Or people who have only killed in self-defense? Or..." Ami really had no idea what she was talking about. "Besides, how can we judge if someoen is pure of heart? Don't we then need to be pure of heart to judge?"
