Redemption: What A Crock [Period 6, Monday]

After the class had assembled in the danger shop, Ares pointed to two lists of names. "I have, purely randomly of course, assigned you to two groups, the Wannabe Heroes, in search of redemption, and the Annoying Sidekicks, who will supposedly aid the Heroes on their quest."

"Now, today, you will choose your sidekick. Or more accurately, your sidekick will choose you, because they're annoying that way. Heroes, your job will be to try to dissuade your sidekick from following you around on your lonely quest for redemption, however actual physical force that would result in damage to your sidekick, while amusing to me, is not generally considered a good tactic. Sidekicks, you stick to your heroes like glue. Let nothing, not even physical force, stop you."

"Well, let's get started."

"I would do the faithful duty of any true sidekick in the case, and wander around aimlessly, finding all the right corridors that are luckily free of evil minions, opening all the right doors without my knowledge of them being the right doors, and finally happening upon the computer core that controls the whole evil operation and shutting it all down by pressing the exact button that needs to be pressed simply by closing my eyes and leaning forward with my index finger outstretched."

"..." John didn't know how to respond to that. "And I would just be free?"

Andrew nodded in the affirmative. "Pretty handy things to have about, sidekicks."

"I'm starting to see that," John replied. "What about if you were trapped somewhere while I was busy saving the princess from a horrible fate? What would you do then?"

"I would do everything I could to get free -- shake on the bars -- annoy the guards -- sing good natured and bawdy songs -- chip away at the walls. And when that doesn't work, I will wait for you to rescue me, because as the hero, it would be pretty easy for you."

"Naturally," John replied, getting into the role of the hero. "Tell me your greatest strength and your greatest weakness as a sidekick. I should know what I'm getting into upfront, after all."

"Easy, as they are one in the same." Andrew rather thought John was looking more heroic. "My greatest weakness and my greatest strength would be my blind devotion to you. If you are injured, I will be there to dress your wounds. When the princess leaves you, I will be there for you to yell at. When you're out of ammo, I will have a spare clip. And if someone questions your general awesomeness, I will always stick up for you -- even if it leads to my personal demise."

Andrew looked at John, "I can keep going..."

John nodded, "That's not too much of a weakness in a sidekick, but I'll accept your answer."

He got a serious look on his face, "Here's the big question: Why do you want to be my sidekick and not, say, Dawn's sidekick?"

That question actually struck a strong chord inside of Andrew. He had to take a moment to gather his thoughts. John didn't know about the future version of Andrew that Dawn seemed to know, the version that so many people seemed to know and worry that he might become. He decided to answer truthfully, which was unusual for him in the first place:

"Because you didn't know me, but you were nice to me. Because you can look at me and judge me for who I am now and not what I might be in five years. And because you're bigger than she is, and that could come in handy in a fight."

He couldn't bring himself to look John in the eyes just now.

"That's...that's cool," John said slowly. He was impressed by Wells' candor.

"You know," John sighed, "I really don't see why I wouldn't want you as my sidekick besides the fact that my assignment is to 'dissuade' you from the job."

"Well, my job is to stick to you like glue," Andrew responded. "So maybe you should just start referring to me as Elmer's, cause I'm stuck on you." Andrew moved to tap John's chest with his index finer.

"True," John agreed, looking down at the finger tapping his chest.

He raised his head and addressed Andrew, "So, Elmer, you wanna be my sidekick? I can't promise you riches or fame, but I do have a stash of power bars in my room."

Andrew may have leapt a little. "Yes!"

He went to give John a big hug because, hey, it was just a good day for hugs.

"You won't regret it!"

John was bewildered and hugged. He attempted a friendly pat on Wells' shoulder.

"I certainly hope not...uh, what was your first name again? I remember Wells is your last name."

"Andrew. I'm Andrew." He pulled back and stuck out his hand.

"Right! Andrew!" John shook Andrew's hand. "I'm John Sheppard, just in case." John grinned cuz he thought he was cute and funny.
