Library [07/15]

The library was open again and there was plenty of coffee for all. Don't get it on the books.

[ETA: After this thread the library would be barricaded up to defend against raptors.]

"I could almost agree with you," Fraser said, wandering in sans hat. "We've had invasions before but dinosaurs. That's different."

"Good afternoon, Mr Fraser," she said with a smile. "Almost?" One eyebrow went up slightly, then she shook her head. "Never mind. Much as I'd like to hear those stories, it can wait. The important question is how do we get rid of them? They're making quite a mess out there."

"This is a subject I've very little knowledge on," Fraser said, frowning. "I've never dealt with dinosaurs in my time. From just the journey to get to the library, their are still large groups of them roaming around. Nothing seems to stop them."

"Nonsense," she replied briskly, but with an encouraging smile. "Everything can be stopped, Mr Fraser. It's just a matter of discovering how. Which is why the library is the sensible place to be."

"Do you have any ideas, Miss Jones?" Fraser asked. "I don't know where to start."

"Start at the beginning," she decided. "When did they appear. Something had to have brought them to the island. I don't think working out they want would serve much purpose, seeing as they're animals." She stopped. "They are animals, correct? They haven't show any signs of sentience?"

"Friday night," he answered. "And I haven't seen any signs of sentience. One ate my hat."

"Oh, I'm dreadfully sorry. About the hat, not the sentience," she clarified. "I wouldn't fancy trying to conduct negotiations with them. You and I would be at a slight disadvantage."

"I don't think they're much listening to any type of language," Fraser said. "I tried reasoning with one but he didn't much take to my reasoning. You are all right, yes? You didn't run into a dinosaur on the way over?"

"I'm perfectly fine," she assured him. "I did see several, and I kept a close eye on them, but for some reason they seemed reluctant to approach. I can't imagine why."

Fraser could but he so wasn't saying anything. "Very good to hear. I've heard reports of some injuries to the students but nothing major, fortunately. Something like this has to be run of the mill for them by now."

Harriet frowned. "So I'm beginning to understand," she said. "So many of these children seem to have missed out on being children. But there's been no serious injuries? You're sure of that?"

"Positive," he said, nodding. "There's been no alert to the school's principal and while the radio does like to embellish, they do keep the topic of serious injuries fairly straightforward."

"That's something at least," she said, somewhat subdued, then shook it off. "So we just need to make sure none occur. And that no one else has their hat eaten." It never occurred to Harriet that the repelling of a dinosaur invasion wasnt, strictly speaking, within the purview of an Applied Ethics teacher. "In the absence of advisers, what do you say we start having a look ourselves?"

"Miss Jones, I think that's a fine idea," he said and nodded.
