Firearms and You #1 (Thursday, period 2)

The Danger Shop was set up like an outdoor target range. Off to the side was a table set up with the sign-in sheet, several handouts, and an urn of coffee.

"Good morning," John greeted the class. "Welcome to Firearms and You. What you should come away from this workshop with is the knowledge of how to take care of and fire various types of guns and the confidence to know when, and more importantly when not to use them.

"You've picked up two handouts; the first one is a general overview of firearms, the history and different types, a number of which you'll have a chance to try out in this class. The second is about gun safety. I expect you all to read it and follow the rules it lists. Not doing so will have consequences ranging from detention to being asked to leave the range for the rest of that class -- or longer for repeated violations." John paused and looked around, trying to figure out which would be the ones most tempted to break the rules. "We're not dealing with toys here and I expect you all to treat the guns as the weapons they are.

"Now for this first session, I'd like to get to know you and what experience you already have. So we're going to go around and have each person give their name and, if you feel capable, step up to the range and demonstrate what you can do. The computer will provide whatever weapon you ask for." He paused. "'I don't have experience' is a perfectly acceptable response."

John looked around and smiled. "So who is going first?"

"Not bad, all things considered," Anders told her, and taking into account certain news he'd learned last night, it was the truth. "And yeah, sometimes I have that amazing habit of being in classes with people," he added in a game, if not entirely successful, attempt at a joke.

"How've you been?"

"Good. I've been good. Practicing the fire stuff. And I had fun in Stupid People on Tuesday, plus, I made spaghetti for people on Monday. You missed it." She cocked her head, then asked, "You okay, Anders?"

"I missed food?" Anders frowned slightly. "Damn. What common room do you take over to cook in?"

He rubbed at the back of his neck. "I'm . . . just a little distracted, I guess." It was a total hedge, yes, but being any less vague kind of felt too awkward.

"The Fourth Floor. Too bad you missed it, the Nomadic Celtic Chef helped out, and so did Isabel. It was delicious," Charlie teased, hoping to lighten his mood. "Next time, I'll send out invitations, or put up posters like everyone else does for everything around here."

It did help, and he did appreciate it. "Or you could give me a call," Anders said with a slight smile. "I'm usually only a floor up. Isabel helped, huh? That can only be a good sign as far as . . . Nomadic who now?"

Charlie giggled, glad to have distracted him. "Ronan. He's cooked twice already, but I didn't know what floor he was on, and Turtle and I came up with this whole scenario where he wanders the Earth, making food for people. And yeah, Isabel, and A.J. made the salad, and even Bart stopped rushing around long enough to fix the bread. It was really good."

"Ah. Ronan's a good guy," Anders said, his smile broader and more genuine this time. "Just don't let him make the cupcakes; I don't know what he does, but they explode. Next time you do something like that, I'll be happy to contribute non-exploded cupcakes, or drinks, or something."

"Cool!" Charlie made mental note to get cupcake-mix as soon as possible. "And he's such a good cook, I'm having a hard time picturing exploding cupcakes. He is a good guy, isn't he?" She looked thoughtful. "I'm glad."

"I have no idea how he does it," Anders interjected, chuckling. "I saw him do everything exactly right, and then they went in the oven and boom. So weird."

He tilted his head, quizzical. "Yeah, you can never have too many good people or friends around here . . . is that not what you meant?"

"I am so going to have to ask him about that," Charlie said, picturing it. Then blushed. "Um, I meant with him and Johnny sort-of... dating. Or whatever. I hadn't really talked to him much before Monday."

"Ronan and Johnny . . . Storm?" asked Anders, one eyebrow threatening to break atmosphere. "Well. That's interesting."

"At least according to Radio? Which, I'm kinda getting isn't the most reliable source ever." Charlie shrugged, bemused. "But yeah, it was a good thing to find out."

He might have to have a talk with a certain little sibling by proxy, later, Anders decided; at the very least he needed to figure out if she was at least in the loop about all of this.

"I'll have to keep that in mind," Anders said half-absently. "Sometimes the radio makes up the worst, most frakked-up stuff ever, and sometimes the weirdest things are the ones that are true."

"Ohh? Like what?" Charlie asked, interest piqued.

"Um." Anders laughed nervously. "You're asking the guy who hardly ever listens any more because the made-up stuff did bad things to his blood pressure."

"Ohhhhhhh." Which did make Charlie wonder, given some of the stuff she *had* heard, what had pissed Anders off. "Hunh. Anyway. They get stuff wrong." Thinking of Turtle's creative editing last night, she added, "Sometimes on purpose, and it's not a bad thing, you know?"

He grinned. "I hear Turtle is big on announcing my cuteness on the nights she's on," Anders remarked. "I can't really argue with that."

"'Still cuter than Marco,'" Charlie quoted, but didn't get into any of the details of the Cuddle Hour. "Which, I think she believes, but she also likes annoying Marco. And advertising Turtle & Canary. And fighting with the squirrels. I never, ever miss Turtle's Radio nights. Best friend support anyway."

"For that alone, I might have to tune in to her nights," Anders mused, completely unaware of the Cuddle Hour thing, and it was probably best that way, really.

Charlie wasn't about to get into that, partly because she's never even met Bel, or Phoebe, and has no idea what's truth and what's soap opera there. "She'll thank you for it, really she will." She grinned. "She's my fellow fangirl for the Nomadic Celtic Chef, so you know she's cool."

Ah, but what would throw her off worse? The truth or the soap opera? Now that's the question.

"She is cool," he agreed, "from what I know of her so far. Which isn't much, but . . ."

"I'll her you said so," Charlie said, and the soap-opera truth would probably leave her stunned, then reaching for her notebook. "But yeah! Cupcakes with Ronan, and we'll ask Turtle to help too. She'll probably even bring the frosting."

"Which reminds me, I still need to go in and spend that gift certificate she got me for my birthday," Anders noted. He'd meant to do that, one time, but got sidetracked talking to Charlie. Heh. "I was going to get more baking supplies."

"She'll be thrilled. Purchases do that for her." Grinning, Charlie said, "Just come find me when you're ready to bake!"
