Patriotism Yay!: Period 2, Week 1

Steve was waiting for his new students in a small clearing this morning. "Good morning!" he said cheerfully. "I'm Steve Rogers, and I'll be your instructor, which you probably knew already. And in this workshop, we will be discussing patriotism and what it means to be a patriot. We'll start off with introductions. Everybody tell me your name, where you're from, and something interesting about you. Then, since I'm going to have a lot of chances to tell you what I think, today I'd like to hear what you think. Tell me what you think patriotism is, and why it's important. We'll start with you," he decreed, picking someone at random.

"Patriotism, to me," Turtle said, sucking in a deep breath because she wanted to make her Uncle Sam (the real one, not the fake one on the posters) proud, "is upholding the values in which your country was founded on, even if it isn't the easiest path to choose."

"Ohh, dear." Evie bit her lip, then said slowly, "Loyalty to one's *country*, but not one particular faction or set of political interests." She chewed her lip. "Except that sometimes that's difficult if they are two countries you're wanting to be loyal too."

"I believe it's loving your country and trying to do what you think is right for it," Sabriel said after a moments thought.

"Doing the right thing in order to protect your country and the people in it."

"Patriotism is having faith in the spirit of your nation and giving yourself up to that faith," Peter said. He wasn't entirely sure what it meant, but it sounded kind of good and a bit different from what the others said. "Also, it's an anagram of 'a prim sit to,' which I think is extremely relevent here because America cherishes its prim sit toos." Peter then wondered how you spell "to" as a plural and soon realized that's why some words weren't meant to be be used as a plural noun.
