Patriotism Yay!: Period 2, Week 1

Steve was waiting for his new students in a small clearing this morning. "Good morning!" he said cheerfully. "I'm Steve Rogers, and I'll be your instructor, which you probably knew already. And in this workshop, we will be discussing patriotism and what it means to be a patriot. We'll start off with introductions. Everybody tell me your name, where you're from, and something interesting about you. Then, since I'm going to have a lot of chances to tell you what I think, today I'd like to hear what you think. Tell me what you think patriotism is, and why it's important. We'll start with you," he decreed, picking someone at random.

"My name is Steve Rogers, as I said before, I'm from New York City, and I recently turned ninety."

After class, Steve hung around for a bit in case anyone wanted to speak to him.

Because preventing the world from ending is patriotic. Really.

Turtle Wexler

"I'm Turtle Wexler," Turtle introduced herself with an excited bounce because she was really looking forward to this class. "I'm from Westingtown, Wisconsin, and I'm co-owner of the Turtle & Canary store right here on Fandom Island! Serving all your general goods needs!"

Leave it to Turtle to work an advertisement into her introduction.

"Patriotism, to me," Turtle said, sucking in a deep breath because she wanted to make her Uncle Sam (the real one, not the fake one on the posters) proud, "is upholding the values in which your country was founded on, even if it isn't the easiest path to choose."

Evie Carnahan

"I'm Evie Carnahan, I'm a hundred and six years old, or sixteen, I'm from London and Cairo, and I almost fell off the dorm roof once!" Evie smiled around the room, then added, "And an American and an Englishman from Narnia rescued me!"

"Ohh, dear." Evie bit her lip, then said slowly, "Loyalty to one's *country*, but not one particular faction or set of political interests." She chewed her lip. "Except that sometimes that's difficult if they are two countries you're wanting to be loyal too."

Seely Booth

"I'm Seely Booth, I'm from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and technically I'm both eighteen and in my late thirties."

Sabriel

"I'm Sabriel," Sabriel introduced herself. "I'm sixteen, and I'm from Ancelstierre and the Old Kingdom. Um, I think I'm the only Charter Mage in Fandom?"

That was interesting, right?

"I believe it's loving your country and trying to do what you think is right for it," Sabriel said after a moments thought.

Lana stopped by to talk to the professor. "Hi, I just wanted to let you know that Jim Ellison's dad pulled him out of school for the week, which is why he's not here today. He should be here next week."

He'd better be back next week!

Peter Pevensie

"Doing the right thing in order to protect your country and the people in it."

"I'm Peter Pevensie," Peter said. "I grew up in England, but I'm from Narnia and I'm a knight."

"Pulled him out of school?" Steve asked, alarmed. "Is everything all right?"

"Charter Mage?" Steve asked. "Is that anything like the Sorceror Supreme?"

Lana nodded a bit glumly. "I think everything's fine. His father just does this periodically to check on Jim, make sure he still jumps whenever his father calls."

"Yes, thank you, Miss Wexler," Steve said dryly. "And while capitalism is a large part of America's national identity, I'll have to ask you not to advertise in my class."

"Well, that's..." saying a lot of not-good stuff about Jim's dad's parenting skills? "unfortunate. Tell Mr. Ellison I'll look forward to having him in my class when he returns."

"Oooo, you too?" Evie beamed at Seely. "I didn't know that about you. Time travel is rather confusing, isn't it?"

Turtle's nose wrinkled, and she bit her lip against an unabashed grin. "Sorry, Mister Rogers," she said. "Habit. Does this include wearing any t-shirts to class that might have the T&C logo on them? Because that's advertising, too, it's just very subtle. In fact, keeping up a general good appearance overall is subtle advertising, as the community knows my position as proprietor, and any impression of myself I leave on others ends up being a impression on my store."

She pressed her lips together, her face pink from the effort of not giggling. She was in one of her moods today.

Lana smiled at him brightly. "I will. Thank you."

The attempt to not giggle did not go unnoticed. Steve folded his arms and arched one eyebrow. "Congratulations, Miss Wexler, you've just shown yourself to be intelligent enough to figure out those answers on your own. Cross the line into using my class for promotional purposes, and we'll talk detention." Years hanging out with Tony Stark had taught Steve all about being too smart for your own good.

"Yes, sir," Turtle said, with seemingly the utmost respect, while dreams of recreating her detention-every-week ambitions frollicked in her head.

"Yeah," Seely grinned back. "That's why I try not to think about it that much."

"I wish I could not think about it, but then there's television and CD's, and it's rather unavoidable... but now I have a real birth certificate! And a Driver's License!" If that ever got back to Deadpool, he'd have a heart attack. "So I can function as if I belong here!"

"I'll admit most of the stuff takes getting used to," Seely said. "But most of it's pretty shiny."

"True. Although I don't know that I could ever be an American of this century." Evie bit her lip, shaking her head. "Things just go too fast, and I adore the loud movies and the music, but... no. I look forward to going home eventually too much." She cocked her head. "Are the 1980's very different? By comparison?"

"They had worse clothes," Seely said. "Really bad."

"Oh dear! And you're going back to that?" Evie gave him a sad look. "I think I shall miss pants. But they're evidently coming into style in about five or ten years, and I shall be able to wear them again. I suppose it's nice to know you have decent fashion to look forward to?"

"Yeah, it is, I guess," Seely said softly.

Evie gave him a worried look, and hesitantly said, "There's other things, of course. There's things in the future I'm going back to, but... I'm hoping the can be avoided. Or changed. Not all the futures are alike, so it stands to reason the past isn't, either." She sighed. "At least I hope so."

Peter Parker

"My name is Peter Parker, I'm also from New York City, and I can climb walls," Peter said, wondering if Mr Rogers here was going to react to that at all.

Steve did, indeed, react to that. And here he'd assumed it was just a very common name. "Climb walls," he echoed. "Like a spider?"

"Patriotism is having faith in the spirit of your nation and giving yourself up to that faith," Peter said. He wasn't entirely sure what it meant, but it sounded kind of good and a bit different from what the others said. "Also, it's an anagram of 'a prim sit to,' which I think is extremely relevent here because America cherishes its prim sit toos." ~~Peter then wondered how you spell "to" as a plural and soon realized that's why some words weren't meant to be be used as a plural noun.~~

"An interesting definition, Mr. Parker," Steve said in response, thinking to himself that this was going to be a very interesting seven weeks indeed.

"Actually, yes, just like a spider," Peter said. That could have been a coincidence or Mr Rogers knew about the Spider-Man thing. Either way, this was definitely not the Steve Rogers Peter was used to. That Rogers would have punched somebody in the throat by now and threatened to have them deported or something.

"Huh," said Steve. "Guess I'm used to you being older." ~~He's just misunderstood!~~
