Self Confidence the Ares Way, [Thursday, Period 2]

Ares grinned at his class as they assembled before him. It wasn't a nice grin. "Now I promised you something special for this last class and I don't want to disappoint."

"Today you are all going to give a practical demonstration of the self-confidence skills that I've been teaching you, by justifing your continued existence. Because let's face it, I'm a god, and if I amused me I could kill you all with hardly any effort. So put on a good show."

Not that he was actually allowed to do anything to them, but hey, they didn't know that.

"I don't think it would be in your best interest to kill one of your advisees," Sam said.

Naminé

Naminé shrugged lightly. "I don't have any. My continued existence is a threat to the powers of Light, and I could be used against someone important. I'm only here because of a favor someone felt they owed me and my own selfishness. If you see fit to end that, I don't have a compelling counterargument."

Naminé was here. Considerably more subdued than last week.

"Why not?"

"Maybe I don't like people who style themselves the powers of Light?"

"At the moment, I'm not fond of them myself," Naminé said, almost surprised at the words as they came out. "Not Light itself, or the keyblade's chosen one, but ... those who wish to serve it and feel that the best way to do so is to hurt others and dispose of anyone who might pose a threat."

Ares tutted. "That doesn't sound like a very Light-friendly way to conduct business."

Wyatt Halliwell

"No. I'm beginning to think perhaps he was more interested in his own motives than Light at all." Naminé looked down for a moment. "That he's awful doesn't make him any less wrong. Or provide a convincing counterargument, I'm afraid."

"But if he's serving himself rather than Light, how do you really know you're a threat to it. Maybe he's actually working against Light?"

"I'm the Twice-Blessed Child," Wyatt said. "I have some sort of magical destiny."

Naminé considered that for a moment. "But ... he helped Sora. Why would he, if he was serving Dark?"

"You don't have to serve Dark to be against Light."

"And I'm the God of War, so I'll need a little more than that to impress me."

"Well, I'm in a good position to listen to your advice and to be loyal to you, and to convince my friends and family that they should be too."

"Keep talking."

"Oh. I don't believe I'd thought of it that way." Naminé bit her lip, thinking. "Then ... perhaps I'd ask that you spare my life in deference to the services I provided, as your assistant. You did seem pleased, last week, when I disrupted class rather rudely."

Ares grinned. "Now you're onto something kid."

Wyatt shrugged. "I'm supposed to be the most powerful force of magic the world has ever seen," he said. "But then again, I guess that gives you more reason to kill me instead if you're afraid of my power. On the other hand, I'm make a good ally."

Karal Austreben (and Altra)

Karal took a deep breath and stood up. Before he could speak, Altra leapt up to sit on the desk in front of him, tail lashing, almost like he knew what was coming.

"No." Karal said it respectfully and calmly, but his voice was very firm. "I will not justify my existence to you."

Mmmmm, nekkid Ares.

Totally feel free to toss Karal in detention.

Robin

"Because I'm too darn cute and fuzzy. And if you don't like cute and fuzzy, then I play a mean banjo. And if you don't like banjo music, then I can sing. And if you don't like singing, then I pity you."

Katara

Katara shrugged. "Why would you want to kill me?"

"Well then." Naminé lifted a shoulder. "You have no strong reason to kill or not kill me, but I have amused you in the past and may continue to do so in the future, and that appears to be enough to shift the argument in my balance."

Demyx

"It's really not worth the effort," Demyx explained, shrugging. "Maybe it'll make you feel better for a little while, but in the long run I'm really just one person out of lots, and besides...if you kill me, there's one less musician in the world. And that would be sad, right??"

Ares seemed more intent on Altra than Karal. "Interesting tactic for someone in your position," he said. "Also, detention for refusing the assignment."

"Well, I've heard less convincing arguments."

"Why wouldn't I?"

"Maybe I don't like music."

Jaina Solo

Altra never took his eyes off Ares. Karal nodded, because he'd expected it. "Very well," he said, still calm and respectful.

Robin beamed.
