Isabel opened the library on time, her coffee in hand. She was still thinking about the message she'd gotten last night.

Karal hadn't got a lot of sleep last night, and he was here as soon as the library opened, carrying more books than someone would usually bring to a library. None were in English, and all looked quite old. "Isabel?" he asked hesitantly. "Would it disturb you if I were to use one of your tables for the day?"

"We don't have enough books for you? You had to bring your own?" she teased. "Not at all. Make yourself comfortable."

"Thank you," he said gratefully, and picked the table closest to the desk to put his books down on. "Your library is wonderful, but it is sort of lacking in forty seven different versions of the Writ of Vkandis Sunlord." He rubbed his forehead and smiled at her wearily. "Which I find myself in need of."

"No, I don't think that's something I've run across," she said. "What are you working on?"

"A problem from home, which needs an answer I am not sure I know how to give." Karal glanced at the table and then back at Isabel. That wasn't even close to the material he needed. "Isabel, I, would you keep a secret for me? It is nothing bad."

"Of course," Isabel nodded, leaning against the table and looking at him curiously. "I can be a black hole of secrets if needed."

Thursday arrived early and disappeared into Special Collections with a blowtorch and a bicycle pump. It was probably best not to ask.

Second Period - 6/19

There was some library work to get done. Isabel picked a section of the stacks and started going through book by book.

Third Period - 6/19

Unable to resist much longer, she was at the computer looking at dresses on various websites.

Anders stopped into the library after his Explosions workshop, hands in his pockets and looking rather ashamed of himself. "Hey, big sis."

"Anders! Hi! What's up?" Isabel asked, slightly more subdued then usual in deference to Karal who was busy working intently at his table.

Anders gulped. "Bel said he talked to you over the weekend? You probably noticed he was acting weird . . ."

"Yeah, he was in share mode," she said, smiling at the memory. "He must have flailed when the gremlin bite wore off."

Lunch - 6/19

Since Karal looked to be very intent on whatever it was he was working on, Isabel ordered in lunch from Ching Tai for both of them.

The library was closed while they ate.

Karal had been reluctant to stop, but Altra had looked at him very sternly, prompting him to smile sheepishly at Isabel and agree that yes, lunch would be very good, thank you.

"This is delicious," he said. "I've never had food like this."

"It's Chinese food. China's a huge country on the other side of the world," she explained, dipping a dumpling in sauce. "I enjoy it. But I do have my suspicions that the food served in Bejing? Is nothing like this."

He carefully picked up a bit of what he was sure was chicken and offered it to Altra, who sniffed it, then delicately accepted it. "Perhaps they make it differently here, for people who are not used to it?" he suggested, taking a crisp roll for himself. "Thank you for lunch, Isabel. I would have forgotten to eat."

"I'm sure it's been Americanized," Isabel nodded. "In some way or another. I'll have to cook one night. I haven't done that in a while."

"I would offer to help, except I do not know how to cook," he admitted, taking a big bite. It was very good, even if it was a bit messy, and he brushed crumbs off himself.

:Hey, what about me?: Altra demanded, looking back and forth between Karal and Isabel.

Once his mouth was empty, he asked, "Do you mind if I put some on a napkin for Altra?"

Fourth Period - 6/19

After lunch Isabel was back to looking at dresses. Although at this point it was more like boggling at some of the especially hideous ones.

Isabel straightened up around Karal in preparation for closing.
