How to Blow Things Up: Period 2 Week 4

Aly had oh so handwavily asked her students to meet her at the main campfire.  When then students arrived, they'd see an assortment of devices that looked a lot like bombs running the gamut from the type of bomb you'd see in the movies to less sophisticated devices. 

She waited for everyone to arrive then started speaking.  "The last few classes, we've talked about how to blow things up.  Which is, admittedly, a lot of fun and also what the class is about.  Today, however, we're going to talk about what happens when you don't want the bomb to go off.  Disabling explosives is a hugely dangerous task, and in general, it's something you want to call in an expert to deal with."  She grinned.  "But I think we all know that when you need an expert, he or she is usually not around.  So today we - and by we, I mean you - are going to work on disarming explosive devices with not quite so many consequences if it's not done correctly."

Gesturing to the assortment of bombs,  she started discussing bomb disposal techniques including the use of a pigstick because that term is awesome and the ever-popular cutting of the correctly coloured wires.

"Now the trick here is that these devices aren't bombs.  But if they are disengaged incorrectly, they will explode."  She grinned.  "I hope you wore clothes that can get paint on them.  If not -" she pointed to a box "-there are some lovely and very fashionable smocks to put on."

"If you have any questions, feel free to ask.  Otherwise, pair up and have fun."

Dean eyed the bomb thoughtfully as he waited for a partner.

"Hey," Ronan said, approaching. "Want to team up?"

"Sure," Dean said. "You wouldn't happen to have a bomb disarming spell would you?"

Ronan chuckled. "Unfortunately, no. But I could try asking it which wire to cut, if you want me to."

"That could be useful. As long as you don't think it would lie to you because it wants to explode all over us."

Ronan considered that for a moment. "Always a risk. But I might be able to talk it out of that." He leaned forward, and whispered softly at the bomb. After a few moments, he straightened and said, "It says to cut the green wire, and that cutting the blue will definitely set it off. Do we want to trust it, or try the other way around?"

"I dunno... did it sound happy about being disarmed?" Dean asked, having no clue really how all this having discussions with things worked.

Ronan frowned. "I'm not sure. Inanimate objects don't really have emotions the way we think of them. And my specialty lies elsewhere, so I'm not all that good at deciphering what is there. So... it could really go either way."

"Great." Dean stared at the bomb, then leaned over, poking gently at the workings, trying to see if one of the two mentioned wires looked more... explodey than the other.

Ronan joined him in leaning over the bomb, also examining the wires. "I can't see anything," he said. "Should we just... try one?"

"Guess we'll have to." He picked up the wire cutters and after a moment's indecision went for the blue wire. Because if he was a bomb he'd definitely lie about how to disarm him.

As it happened, this particular bomb was not lying.

And so green paint exploded out of it.

Ronan looked down at himself. "Note to self," he said, "next time, trust the bomb to be telling the truth."

Dean wiped green paint off his face. "How about next time we just throw one of those forcefields of yours around it and just let it go boom?"

Ronan blinked. "... Sure. I seriously should have thought to try that this time."

Dean traded looks with Ronan. "Let's not mention that part to anyone as it kinda makes us look like idiots."

"Right," Ronan said. "We were purposefully leaving it off this time so as to achieve the full experience in case our bomb was to explode."

"Or... we thought it would be against the spirit of the assignment," Dean spun.

"Yes! Exactly." Ronan considered. "Do we want to try disarming another bomb? This time with a forcefield. After all, we've already been painted once."

"Could end up painted in clashing colours," Dean said, but shrugged. "Sure, let's give it a try. Hopefully only your forcefield will get paiinted this time."

Ronan nodded, and started spinning the spell for the forcefield in his head as they decided on a new 'bomb'.
