Dealing With Stupid People [Monday, 2nd period]

"Today, you will deal with real people, so keep your eye rolling to a minimum, please," Josh said as the students assembled in the Danger Room Shop that he totally told them about, rly. "We will be working...retail!" he said, clapping his hands together.

The Danger Shop turned into a sandwich store of a chain that might be familiar to some of you, oh yes. "Half of you will be working behind the counter. The other half of you will be the incredibly irritating customers. Ask how long a foot-long sandwich is! Demand a sandwich with everything except most of the ingredients! Wonder why a sandwich shop doesn't serve Mexican!" Josh's grin turned positively evil. "And you customer service types--remember to smile. And, um, not to punch anyone."

"Good day," Ronan said, dialing up his Irish lilt. "How can I help you?"

"A sandwich," Mac said simply. "You can help me by supplying me with a sandwich."

"Any particular variety of sandwich that you're looking for?" Ronan asked. "I can help you more effectively if I know what you like."

"Recommend me one," Mac said. "I don't know what's good. You work here, and must do, right?"

Ronan nodded. "All right, then," he said. "My particular favorite is the chicken breast sub, with the spicy chili sauce; on the other hand, if you'd rather something vegetarian, we have a veggie club that my sister is incredibly fond of. Or, if red meat is more to your taste, I recommend the meatball sub."

"I don't like any of those things," Mac replied, wrinkling her nose. "Can you tell me about some others?"

Somehow, Ronan's smile never wavered. Those who knew what he was might start to suspect wizardry was somehow involved.

"Absolutely," Ronan said. "But first it might help me to help you if you could give me some indication of your tastes."

"I'm a vegan, I really like coffee, I don't like tomatoes and... " Mac paused, trying to think of another thing to add to her list, "I uh, like my food without any form of artificial colours and flavourings."

She then smiled at him triamphantly. How was he going to find her a sub that fitted those tastes?

"Oh, really? Then you might be interested in trying our new bread! It's slightly more expensive, costing ten cents more per sandwich, but it's made from locally-grown, organic, gluten-free grains, and is completely vegan." He smiled. "Also, all of our vegetables are already locally produced, so I can offer you a vegetarian sub on this new bread. Are you interested?"

Damn.

"Definitely," Mac said, keeping that smile firmly plastered on. "I only have... $2," she continued. "How long a sub can I get with that?"

"You're in luck," Ronan said. "Because it's a new product, we're offering a special! You can get a foot-long sub for $2, or you can get a six-inch sub with the combo for the same price."
