Dealing With Stupid People [Monday, 2nd period]

"Today, you will deal with real people, so keep your eye rolling to a minimum, please," Josh said as the students assembled in the Danger Room Shop that he totally told them about, rly. "We will be working...retail!" he said, clapping his hands together.

The Danger Shop turned into a sandwich store of a chain that might be familiar to some of you, oh yes. "Half of you will be working behind the counter. The other half of you will be the incredibly irritating customers. Ask how long a foot-long sandwich is! Demand a sandwich with everything except most of the ingredients! Wonder why a sandwich shop doesn't serve Mexican!" Josh's grin turned positively evil. "And you customer service types--remember to smile. And, um, not to punch anyone."

"I'm not sure, I've never been in here before. What would you recommend?"

"The Assorted is usually pretty good. You get three kinds of meat for the same price as a regular Ham sub."

Most of that knowledge had come from a quick look at the specials board while putting on her ugly t-shirt.

"Oh, I'm sorry, I don't eat meat. I should have said," she was very apologetic, but continued to look at Will expectantly.

It should also be noted that she did eat meat, but this was a class assignment.

Working in a bad customer service job was probably not good for someone who blushed easily. As such, a reddish glow started to develop along Will's cheeks.

"Oh, sorry! Umm, we do have vegetarian choices without the lunch meat. Would you care for a veggie or tofu sub?"

"What vegetables are available?" She asked.

Will took a quick scan over the veggie part of the sandwich making station.

"Uh, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, green peppers, and olives. And I think those might be pineapple chunks at the end."

"I'll take a sandwich with everything, then," she decided.

"Great," she Will with a smile. She pointed to a display behind glass at the start of the line. "Which kind of bread do you want it on?"

"There are different kinds of bread?" On some level, Inara wasn't pretending her surprise. This one establishment offered more variety than most places that weren't on the wealthiest Core planets.

Having grown up in big cities all her life, Will didn't grasp Inara's amount of surprise.

"There are. There's--" She quickly read the labels on the back. "-- Italian, Herbs and Cheese, Whole Wheat, and Sourdough. Got a pref?"

"Herbs and Cheese," she decided that sounded recognizable, "Oh, and double lettuce, no onions, please."

"You got it," she said.

Will grabbed one of the cheese breads from a bin behind the counter, and cut it open in the middle. Putting on some cheap plastic gloves, she scooped a bunch of lettuce into the bun.

"What other veggies?"

"Everything but onion," she said, watching Will work.

Will nodded, and added on a handful or so of all the veggies available , including the may-or-may-not-be-pineapple, but avoided the onions.

She looked back up at Inara and smiled. Did you want any sauce on your sandwich?"

"Oh, were those tomatoes?" Inara asked, wincing inwardly, but again trying to remember that it was for an assignment, "I don't want any of those either, but thank you."

"Oh. Um, okay."

Will kept herself from sighing, and poked at the sandwich until she'd pulled out all the tomato slices.

"Better?"

"Yes, thank you," she nodded agreeably.

Will let out a small sigh in relief before putting her customer-is-always-right smile on again.

"So, would you like sauce on this, to have it heated, or are you good to go?"

"What kind of sauce do you have?"

She checked the bottles on the counter.

"Mayonnaise, Sweet Onion, Hot and Spicy, and the mysteriously named 'Sub Sauce'."

Inara leaned over the counter, "What's in the sub sauce?"

Will held up the bottle so that both she and Inara could see it better.

"I have nooooo idea. Sub bits?"

Tilting her head to study the bottle, she asked, "Isn't that like cannibalizing the sub?"

"I guess so," said Will shrugging her shoulders. "I honestly have no idea whatever it is they put in here."

"Let's not have that, then," Inara decided. "Does the sweet onion sauce have onions in it?"
