Arts & Crafts 3, Tuesday Afternoon, Main Campfire

This afternoon Steve was standing over a table of useless junk. At each of the tables for workshoppers were glue, glitter, paint, and pipe cleaners.

"Today we're going to work on improvisational art," Steve said. "I've...handwavily appropriated some items from a store in town." He'd tried to pay, but there didn't seem to be anyone to pay. "You are to incorporate at least one of them into your project. Make whatever you want. Go wild. Have fun."

After a moment of silence, he added as a sort of footnote, "The theme of your project should be, 'Why the Superhuman Registration Act is a bad idea and will never work.'"

"I don't mind explaining," she said with a light blush. "Though I'm certain if you came up with your own, it would probably be more insightful, as it's not terribly deep."

She indicated the pamphlet. "This is what they would like - everything all nice and neat and conformed and orderly. A pamphlet explaining that teenagers shouldn't have sex, which they assume will lead to teenagers not having sex." Then the cheesecloth condoms. "What it really leads to: teenagers having sex, but doing so in a poorly educated and harmful manner. It's not a deterrent, it just makes things worse." And then the instructions. "These are supposed to inform you of how to do something, but they've been garbled by a language barrier to the point that they're no longer usable in any meaningful way."

She gestured to all of it. "Communication has broken down. Nothing is what it appears to be. None of the goals are accomplished. What is meant to help only makes the problem worse."

"I wasn't assigning blame," she noted quickly. "And I think any time something has to be regulated, officially, from an institution, you get committees on wordings and the policy becomes less clear. Like the pamphlet. And when there's fear involved ..."

She shook her head. "I shouldn't be speaking on things I don't know about. I'm sorry. That it happened at all, much less so quickly, and that I'm presuming to know about how you must feel."

Naminé looked up, hearing the sadness in his voice, and swallowed. "Then you have my apologies again."

She looked at her piece. "Have you made any art about it?"
