Firearms and You #3 (Monday, period 1)

As before the class was in the Danger Shop and which was set up in the by now familiar shooting range. The coffee was there on the table by the sign in sheet and another handout.

"Good morning," John said. "Last week, we worked with handguns. This week we're moving on to shotguns. The handout will give you a little of their history and the different types you might want to try.

"One thing in particular about shotguns is the ability they have to use many different kinds of ammunition. For instance, those who took Hunting with me will know that I often use rocksalt rounds against ghosts, but that's just one variation. What I'd like for you to do today is not only try different types of shotguns, but also different types of ammunition.

"As always, I'm here if you have any questions or want advice."

Turtle was quite clearly really, really hesitant as she looked over the shotguns. These guns...were really biiiig.

Turtle clearly didn't have much gun experience, could you tell?

"They can have a bit of a kick," Tannim warned her.

"Looks like they'd have more than just a bit," Turtle responded, frowning worriedly with her eyes still on the guns.

Great. As if being embarrassed by being intimidated by the shotguns weren't enough, now she had to be embarrassed in front of Tannim.

"If you pick lightweight ammo and a somewhat heavy gun, you won't have as much kick," Tannim advised. He'd spent some time reading up about guns on the Internet so as not to make a fool of himself in this class. And if he sounded knowledgeable in front of a cute girl... well, all the better.

"Really?" Turtle asked, biting her lip a little. She was trying not to blush and seem like an idiot, but it was pretty cool that Tannim was helping her. She smiled a little and looked over the supplies to locate at least the lightweight ammo for the moment. "You have a lot of experience with these? she asked, eyes half on inspecting the choices of shotguns and half on him.

"Not a lot," Tannim admitted. "But I took the Hunting class last semester."

"More experience than me, then," Turtle said with a huff of a sigh as she picked up a shotgun and sort of tested out its weight as if she knew what she was looking for. "I...don't even know how to hold one of these things," she said, frowning, and holding it up in a vague imitation of how she'd seen other people do it, and then looking shyly over at Tannim. "How's this?"

"Close," Tannim said. "But you might be better like this." He hesitantly touched her arm to move her into the proper position.

Turtle's toes were wiggling in her sneakers a little, and she had to bite on her lip again to keep down a grin, which left her face a little red. She tried to pull the lip-biting off as concentration, and would totally deny that she kinda almost on purpose didn't quite get the adjustment correct to that Tannim would have to correct her a little bit more.

"Like...this?"

"Just about," Tannim said. His cheeks were a little pink from being close to her. He adjusted her grip again.

Turtle adjusted accordingly. For real this time, because she was starting to feel silly at sort of dumbing herself down just because Tannim was close to her. That was what stupid girls like Annette did, and what she should be doing was paying close attention to how he instructed her and then impressing his socks off by shooting well. "Better?"

It was really hard to pay too much attention to the gun, though, with Tannim being so close and cute and, yeah, totally blushing. Had to be.

"Good," Tannim said. He gestured at the target and took a small step back. "Wanna give it a shot?"

"Yes," Turtle said with a firm nod, shifting slightly so that she was facing the target better. She held the position so she could remember and return to it after loading the gun and getting it ready, which she did very carefully and tried to remember everything right from the handout because it would be really embarrassing if she screwed this up with Tannim watching.

She resumed her hold on the gun and carefully eyed the target, lining it up, and pulled the trigger.

...Tannim wasn't kidding about the kick, and Turtle leaned back a little and her aiming was completely lost, but at least she'd managed to still knick the top of the target.

"Aw, heck."

Tannim smiled. "Not too bad for the first time. Want to try again?"

Re: Firing range

Turtle's eyes narrowed at the target. "Yes," she said, because she had a vendetta against that target now. She wasn't going to let it stop her from being non-impressive to the boy she liked. Even if she did have it in good confidence that he totally already though she was cool.

This time, she placed her feet very firmly and prepared for the kick, fought against it as best she could. And it worked, too, because this time she'd gotten the upper right corner of the target. No where near the center still but it was an improvement. Ha! Take that, target!

She lowered the gun and turned back at Tannim with a grin. "Not bad at all, I'd say." She handed the gun over to him. "Your turn now."
