Freelance Treasure Hunting, Monday, Period 5, Class #3

The class had been handwavily instructed to report to the Danger Room Shop for today's class. Vala was looking especially smug as she played with the dials on the machine and munched on an apple.

"Hello," she greeted them cheerfully, "and welcome to what I'm sure will be an enlightening afternoon for you. Today we will be dealing with how to obtain your treasure or priceless artifact, once you've located it. As I'm sure you probably already know, in many instances, people who collect priceless and historically important artifacts and works of art tend to have elaborate security systems protecting these items and making it more difficult--but, and this is important, not impossible--for an enterprising individual such as one of you to obtain or liberate them."

"So, in today's class, there will be a number of scenarios programmed into the trust computer imaging system here, and your assignment will be to free it from its unfortunate incarceration. Please be aware that there will be a number of alarm systems and surprises along the way. There is also a table with tools," she gestured towards a number of burglary tools that were nicely arrayed on a table at the side of the room in Vanna White-esque fahion, "should you require them. Also, feel free to ask any questions along the way, and either my charming minion-er, assistant-or myself will answer you as soon as we can."

Well, she's not very good with the high-tech, since her world seriously lacks it. Okay. She decides to jam a knife into the card reader and see if maybe she can jimmy it a little and see what the hell happens then.

Rikku made a face. Great. It didn't do anything. She pocketed the knife and looked around.

High-tech? Not her thing. Let's crank this old school with the good-old-fashioned smash and grab.

She digs the circular tool thing out and decides to cut a hole in the glass. She's got a smoke bomb in her other hand, should she need it.

Rikku made a face. Steel plate. Lame.

She still has the smoke bomb handy, which is good, because if she's not mistaken there might be company coming soon.

Company might be helpful; they might have one of those card-things. In the meantime, if everything's gone to hell, might as well not worry about being quiet.

Steel plate? Meet Mr. Crowbar!

Oh, good. Company. And she was still holding a crowbar! Not a claw, but way better than nothing.

She slashed a few times with the crowbar, and aimed a low sweeping kick for his knees. If she could get him down, she might have a few seconds to check him for goodies before his friends joined the fun.

Rikku was moved by his kindness and totally took a few seconds to frisk his pockets, looking for interesting keys, cards, or handy-dandy weapons. She's got one eye on his compadres over there by the door.

Rikku swiped the key card and the ring of keys. The baton was nice, but she already had a crow bar. She let the pepper spray go, since every second mattered.

She tossed a smoke bomb over to the feet of the Authority Squad over there and popped the card into the card slot, hoping all that jimmying hadn't busted it.

Score. She was already little and good at squeezing into places, so she dropped down and crawled for all she was worth.

Hopefully she could hang on to the crow bar, since she wasn't out of the woods yet.

Dammit. Not gonna fit under there. Time to case the room and look for alternatives. Doors? Windows? Exits? Come on, come on, maybe a button or ...

Looking over the case again, Rikku saw a trapdoor. Awesome.

First order of business: she grabbed another smoke bomb, to keep it handy in her left hand.

Second was squeezing through the hole into the enclosure. She had to lose the crowbar in her right hand to do it, but she remembered to pop a hand out afterwards and pull it in with her.

Now. She could kneel down and take a good look at that trapdoor. Were there any keyholes? If so, she'd try riffling through the keyring quickly looking for possible matches, and failing that, bust out the lockpicks. If not, she still had the crowbar...

Okay, think fast. Rikku didn't have any sleep grenades to toss under the steel door. And she burned way too many seconds finding the stupid key.

She found her best wavering voice. "You're not going to shoot, are you? I'm scared! I won't come out if you're gonna sh-shoot me!"

And in the meantime, threw open the trapdoor and started dragging the bomb over to it. As quietly as humanly freaking possible.

When in doubt, rely on being tiny and looking totally harmless. She eyerolled and tried not to giggle.

"I'm s-scared of the taser, too! I'll come out with my hands up but only if you promise not to taser me! Do you p-p-promise?"

Time to find out where the trapdoor went! She hefted the bomb and very very carefully stepped through.

Ah, stupidity. Where her own may trip her up from time to time - and it did - a lot - at least she could count on the stupidity of others to make things right again.

She still had the smoke bombs handy in case company came along, because they'd probably be moving faster. Not sure what good they'd be, in that case, but ... Rikku hurried faster. Fresh air. That was good. Right?

Rikku considered. "I think I kinda learned that I have no idea how to do techno-stuff, and need to ask about that. And that playing innocent always helps, and so does beating the crap out of things, and that authority people showing up isn't necessarily bad. And that in a real-life situation you should totally case the joint beforehand if you can so that you know what you're up against. Uh, and that those bomb things are heavy."
