How to Blow Things Up: Period 2, Week 2

The class met in the Danger Room today.  Aly was looking beyond gleeful at the situation. 

"Okay guys, our first practical class is here in the Danger Room so everyone can get used to the way handling explosives feel without the possibility of them actually blowing you up.  This one is going to be a redux for those of you who were in my Revolutions class so I apologise but review is never a bad thing."

"We're going to deal with improvised devices today, and two in particular, but first you do need to know a bit about the theory,"  Aly gave a concise but thorough lecture on explosive materials and the science behind them.  When she was done, she didn't quite say 'now that that's out of the way,' but she was obviously more interested in the practical aspects of making things go boom.

"The two explosives we're going to work with today are two improvised explosives.  You don't always have access to military material and you definitely don't always need it.  One of the most common explosives in this word - and also one of the easiest to make is anfo - fertiliser and fuel oil.  It sounds simple but a just a ton or so in a the right place could blow up a cargo ship and the harbor it's sitting in.  The other is less an explosive than a weapon.  Molotov cocktails - half gasoline, and half motor oil - you've probably already heard of them if your from this world.  They're easy to make and can do a lot of damage especially against gasoline engines or wood structures."

"There's hundreds of other kinds of improvised explosives and we'll talk about those.  What I want you to do today is to pair up and discuss when this type of improvised explosive device would be useful.  Then make anfo into a bomb and also make the Molotov cocktails.  After you have them ready, you can blow things up."

Under what circumstances would these two types of bombs be useful? Why would you use them? What makes them so useful?

Gavin took a seat again with what I meant to write this time and looked over the materials. These type of explosives weren't all that familiar to him and the terms even less so.

Rikku was bouncing off the walls. EXPLOSIVES! New ones she didn't know! This was so great.

Oh, yeah, she should probably get a partner. One who didn't mind her going a mile a minute. Heh.

Abigail looked around for anyone she might have already met to partner up with, and realized that she was probably going to have to suck it up and talk to someone new.

Charlie may have still been reading the materials very very closely when it came time to pair up, biting her lower lip worriedly.

The fuel oil and the fertiliser need to be mixed up. As soon as that happens, the fertiliser starts oxidizing and will be ready to explode.

After it's mixed, there are pipes for the mixture to be tamped into and fuses to be added.

Play with it handwavily. If you want to screw up and have it ignite too soon, that's fine, but Danger Room so you won't get hurt. Just a flash and a bit of a bang to show you screwed up.

Rikku rubbed her hands together excitedly. "Okay! We've got oil and stinkiness, and pipes. Oooooooh, this is gonna be good. How we wanna do this?"

Mix half gasoline, half motor oil (so the gasoline will stick) and pour it into a glass bottle and stop it up with a rag.

There are plenty of supplies for everyone to make things as boomerific as possible.

Charlie was being super, incredibly, amazingly, totally careful as she put the the cocktails together. Nothing was getting spilled. Not too full, not too little.

Charlie held the Molotov cocktail in her hand, then looked at the rubble. "Every student's dream," she mutter out loud. Then took a breath, and lit the cocktail with a lighter, and threw it at the rubble.

"Incoming!"

Rikku was bouncy, too. Okay, Rikku was always bouncy. Still.

"Hi! That was so awesome! I'm gonna remember that stuff! Is it easy to get here?! I wonder if you can compress it down into some kind of gem-thing for storage?! I wonder how much Rin would pay me for that?! And hey! Did you bring me hair dye, really??? 'Cause it's okay if you forgot or whatever but if you did that would be so, so great!"

Sokka hung out quietly near the back and watched. This class was AWESOME! Sokka was SOOOOO pissed he didn't get signed up for it like he wanted, and he was DEFINITELY going to sign up for it next session. Twice, just in case.

Which is why he was sort of sad when he grabbed some supplies, made a few Molotov cocktails, and lobbed them at Aly.

The first half of season 3 really needs to be out on DVD now so I can have CANON ICONS OF MAKING THINGS GO 'SPLODEY. :(
