Luau, The Main Campfire, Friday evening

Around dinner time on Friday, the main campfire was transformed. Leis and grass skirts were available to all. A pig was roasting kabobs. There was Hawaiian music playing from somewhere. There was also a limbo stick of doom. If you lost, you died.

Okay, that was just Drax's hope. He couldn't make it happen in reality. Woe.

[OOC: FRIDAY SPECIAL EVENTS BEGIN ANEW! Students, instructors, and townies are all welcome.

Also, I turned off notifications, zomg.]

"I'm sorry to hear that," she said sympathetically, "and yes, but I'm not sure I understand all of the significance, not being from this planet."

"Cool! If you have any questions, I've got answers. Not necessarily good answers, but answers," John grinned, he'd never met a hot alien before.

"Why is there a pig roasting over the fire?" She whispered.

"Oh, uh, well, they roast it to cook it. I hear it's pretty tasty that way, if you like pork. If they have bread we can make pork sandwiches," John was still wanting that turkey sandwich.

"I've never had one of those," she admitted, "but I'm willing to try. I'm still enjoying all the fresh fruit and vegetables. And why are some people wearing grass skirts?"

"Willingness to try new things is my favorite character trait," John grinned at Inara. "Earth food is good, but then, I've never had non-Earth food. The grass skirts and flower necklaces are a Hawaiian thing, I think. Hawaii's an island that's really far from here. The skirts have something to do with a special hip-wiggling dance done by attractive girls there."

"Hip-wiggling dance?" She asked, wide-eyed. "That is something that sounds like it could be very interesting. Do you know how it's done?"

Re: Main Campfire

John had seen people do the grass skirt dance, but he didn't generally wiggle his hips for others. "Uh, I think you have to be really bendy and it may require a hoop."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] ambassadorinara.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
"And do you know where I would find one of these hoops?" Yes, she was teasing him a little bit now, but she did have the bendy part covered.

John kinda wished he'd brought a hula hoop with him, not that he'd even seen one since he was 8. "No, I don't know if they have hula hoops in Fandom. Besides, I hear the dance is a very difficult feat to accomplish."

"Really? Why is that?" Inara leaned forward a little with interest. This sounded very useful, and something that might be helpful in her future profession.

"Because of the hoop and the bendy bit. You'd have to see for yourself. Maybe someone here will get drunk and give it a try," John doubted this, but if all else failed they could check the library for video.

Inara smirked at him, "Is this something boys do too, or is it strictly for spectators?"

John pondered that for a minute. "I don't know that I've heard of boys doing the hula, but I don't think it would be hard, assuming the guy is bendy."

Re: Main Campfire

"How, er, bendy, do you have to be?" She studied John, trying to determine whether or not he'd be flexible.

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, I think most athletic types would be bendy enough. Like, for instance, I'm a skateboarder and I have to keep myself flexible to do jumps and little acrobatic things." John worried he'd just opened himself up to something, but went with it anyway.

"So you could do this as well, in theory?" She asked, smiling slightly, "and what's skateboarding?"

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"In theory, yes," he replied. "Skateboarding is...complicated. I'd have to show you sometime."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] ambassadorinara.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'd like to see that," she decided.

"Okay. Drop by Jackalope sometime and I'll show you my stuff," he replied.

"Perhaps I will. I'm in Basilisk, if you're ever looking for someone to talk to," she offered.

"Good to know," John replied with a smile.
