Luau, The Main Campfire, Friday evening

Around dinner time on Friday, the main campfire was transformed. Leis and grass skirts were available to all. A pig was roasting kabobs. There was Hawaiian music playing from somewhere. There was also a limbo stick of doom. If you lost, you died.

Okay, that was just Drax's hope. He couldn't make it happen in reality. Woe.

Sam blushed softly, wrapping his arm around her waist. "Well, I guess I can't complain about you thinking that way. I like your skirt," he said, passing his fingers through the grass.

"It rustles when I do this," she told him, swaying her hips gently, bumping them into his fingers.

"So it does," he said, paying much more attention to the movement of her hips than to how the grass skirt sounded.

"What brought on the sudden attack of half-nakedity, not that I'm complaining?" She asked, smiling up at him.

"I just figured I'd beat everybody to the punch before they started suggesting that I should get in the mood and get undressed," Sam said. "I can put my shirt back on if you'd like..."

She draped her arms around his neck and tilted her head back a little, letting her hair fall behind her, "I'm kinda torn about that--because, on the one hand, I'm never going to complain about you being undressed, but on the other, I like being the only person who knows how hot you are under your ninety-seven layers."

"Hey, I don't wear ninety-seven layers," Sam protested, slipping his arms around her waist. "At least, not every day."

"I was exaggerating," she swayed in his arms, just enjoying the peacefulness of the moment, "and you'd die of heat stroke if you did."

"That would definitely suck," Sam said, content in swaying and running his hands along Dawn's lower back. "I am going to have to cover up less now that we're in summer."

"California's very warm all the time," she hinted, "but right now, I'm just very in favor of summer. I'm ready to go hang out on the beach."

"Mmmm. I think I'm ready to watch you go hang out on the beach, especially if this involves a bikini," Sam teased.

"It could, if you were willing to put the sunscreen on me again, because I am pale like a pale thing and burn easily."

"Of course I'll put sunscreen on you. What kind of a boyfriend would I be if I let you get sunburned?" he asked. "And really, you can't expect me to let someone else have the chance to put their hands on you. That's just not right."

"Dean did," Dawn remembered, "and god, you drove me crazy."

"I did?" Sam asked, genuinely confused. "How?"

"You were dating Buffy, and I was dating Dean, but then you were running your hands all over me and I couldn't tell you how much I liked it without causing big problems."

Sam looked down, letting his fingers run through her grass skirt again. "I totally screwed things up last summer by not being honest with you from the start," he said. "I'm sorry."

"Hey, that's not what I meant," she said gently. "And if you were listening, you'll hear that I wasn't completely honest with myself, either."

"Okay, so we were both dumb last summer," Sam said. "It's a good thing we both got smarter."

"It really is." More smiling up at him, "And this isn't so bad, right? You, me, lots of sand, tons of dark..."
