Library, Wednesday [05/16]

With the area properly cleared and safe for people to walk through, Thursday opened the library. She pushed the door open and looked inside. The grimace on her face said it all.

While the structure was intact and (after a cursory look inside) Special Collections was seemingly undisturbed, the main library itself was in shambles. Every single book was off the shelves. Some of the shelves were flat on the ground. Chairs were on their sides or up-ended. The computers looked worse for wear.

They had some work ahead of them, that was for sure. It didn't help that the power was seemingly out.

"Best get to it then," she said to herself and moved to pick up a chair.

[OOC: While we're not looking for any new library aides until Fall, feel free to come by the library when it's opened by one of the current aides and help clean and reshelve. Please follow the instructions given by the librarian and the aides.]

"I was just coming over to check in, I didn't realize it would be this bad," she said. "But yes, I'm one of the library aides so I'll be around to help straighten up."

"I will likely be here until it is restored," he said, smiling as he carefully dusted off a particularly large hard cover. "The librarian seems to think I can assist. If I'd known you were a library aide, I probably would have pestered you to let me in."

"Now you know one of my many secrets," Isabel smiled. "I'm not sure what the summer schedule is going to be, but I'll probably be here one day a week. You can come by and keep me company."

Which had him looking at the book in his hand, smiling shyly at it. "I would like that, if you're certain I wouldn't be intruding?"

"Not at all," she promised. "Sometimes it gets too quiet in here. Company would be appreciated. How are things going? Settling in okay? No more glitter worries?"

"I believe I am," he said, sounding surprised. "There's been no more glittering attempts. Now that I know it's not mandatory, I won't mind if someone wants to decorate me. Though," he glanced around, blushing slightly, and lowered his voice, "may I ask you something?"

"Of course," Isabel said, getting a sudden image of Karal decorated like a Christmas tree.

"Is it common practice that half naked people traverse the camp ground at night?" If it was, Karal was staying in his alcove with the curtain shut for the remainder of the summer nights.

Isabel couldn't help herself, she laughed out loud. "I'm sorry," she said thinking of her conversation with Thursday (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/1368601.html?thread=81660185#t81660185). "People must have gotten bored."

When she finally stopped snickering, Isabel studied Karal's robe. "I guess it depends on what you consider half naked. Because as it gets warmer, people will be wearing less and less. Especially if they're at the beach."

Karal shifted slightly at that, setting the book down and reaching for a thin paperback, turning it over in his hands. "I guess I'm simply going to have to accustom myself to seeing rather more of people than I'm used to seeing," he said thoughtfully. "It is somewhat of shock. Not that I believe it's bad," he hastened to add, thoughts of some of the adherents to the old Writ who'd believe exactly that, "it's just different."

"Yeah, I can imagine," Isabel nodded, stacking up some of the romance novels that had fallen and placing them on the table. "What are some of the other differences you've noticed?"

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-16 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"Apart from near naked people running around?" he asked, risking a quick smile up at her. "Technology," he said, still hoping he was using that word correctly, "is a large one, and the idea of other worlds. They make this place different. But the main difference I believe is the people. They seem very excepting, and without fail everyone I have met thus far has been very nice."

Of course, no one here had heard of Karse, nor been its enemy for generations. There were no misapprehensions to undo.

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-16 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Isabel smiled back, not sure if she should warn him about certain people's tendency to go fully naked on occasion. "Technology is a big jump, let me know if you have any questions. I'd be glad to help."

"The people are different here," she said, continuing to pick books up off the floor and stack them on the table for the time being. "I think because so many of us didn't quite fit in in the places we came from. We appreciate being here where we can be different without it being a problem. If that makes sense?"

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-16 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thank you," he said, following her example and returning to stacking and sorting books. "That does make rather a lot of sense. My country has seen many changes, and people cling to the old ways because the new ways are different and so they are scared." And also deprived them of power and the ability to feel superior. "Here, different seems to be normal, so people are quick to accept things they've never seen or heard of. Even I've done so! "

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-16 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yes, normal in Fandom is entirely different then normal anywhere else," she chuckled. "My first clue about that was the day I got here. And met a small purple dragon."

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-16 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"A dragon?" he asked. "I'm not familiar with that term. Is it a creature of some kind?"

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-16 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"A dragon's a mythical creature that breathed fire. Except the one here wasn't so mythical," Isabel grinned.

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-17 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Glory, that would have been quite a surprise!" he exclaimed. "Did it breathe fire? And is it still here?"

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-17 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
"He did. He apparently battled ducks." And that was certainly a memory, a slightly singed duck carcass. "Unfortunately he left a while ago."

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-17 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
"That is a shame. I would have liked to have seen him," he said. "Though I'm sure that the ducks were happy to see him go. Are there any other creatures on this island that I should be aware of? Apart from gremlins. I've been warned about those."

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-17 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes, gremlins should be avoided at all costs," Isabel nodded. "Otherwise massive embarrassment is possible. The island had Teal Deer. They're wee tiny dear that live in the preserve. They're attracted to long winded speeches. So keep your eyes open, they might be spotted during Stupid People if Professor Lyman really gets on a roll."

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-17 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
"It is a good thing they don't have those in Valdemar, or certain people would never see anything but tiny deer," he said, struck by a sudden vision of the Council overrun with the small animals. "Isabel, did that class seem strange to you?"

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-17 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Compared to some I've taken here? Not really," she said, shaking her head. "The thing to understand about Professor Lyman is that he's incredibly sarcastic, so things will sound rather harsh. But in reality he's an incredibly nice man. Now the activity? That's another story. Related to technology."

Knowing there was a nice person under the rather biting exterior made him feel better. "My partner in the exercise, Mac, said that it was spam which is a letter that arrives in your email inbox." Karal glanced down at the book in his hands. "I know what a letter is, the rest is just words."

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-17 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
"Email is an electronic letter. Which is probably more easily explained if I could actually show you a real email as opposed to junk mail."

She thought about how to explain it and hoped she was making the right assumptions, "In your world, if a shop or some business wanted to let people know what they had, would they put out handbills or something like that?"
