Library, Wednesday [05/16]

With the area properly cleared and safe for people to walk through, Thursday opened the library. She pushed the door open and looked inside. The grimace on her face said it all.

While the structure was intact and (after a cursory look inside) Special Collections was seemingly undisturbed, the main library itself was in shambles. Every single book was off the shelves. Some of the shelves were flat on the ground. Chairs were on their sides or up-ended. The computers looked worse for wear.

They had some work ahead of them, that was for sure. It didn't help that the power was seemingly out.

"Best get to it then," she said to herself and moved to pick up a chair.

[OOC: While we're not looking for any new library aides until Fall, feel free to come by the library when it's opened by one of the current aides and help clean and reshelve. Please follow the instructions given by the librarian and the aides.]

Thursday decided to start with stacking chairs off to the side.

This simply wasn't working and the bruises on her shin were proof. Thursday was now in the process of getting as much light into the room as possible.

It might have been a library, but music was playing. Cleaning needed music. Sadly it was this (http://www.afn.org/~afn30091/1988.html) CD, so unless you like tacky 80s music, it probably wasn't all that conducive to cleaning.

She was now onto clearing a big space to sort all the books later in the week.

The library is closed unless you're Thursday or one of the aides, although Thursday has ducked into town to get something to eat.

Lunch was over and it was on to trying to find a list of all of the books in the library to do a stocktake while it was all in shambles.

Time to pack up for the day.

You raaaaang?

Aravis had woken and dressed bright and early, and made her way up to the school to the library.

"Good morning?" she called softly, peering at the debris.

"Hello!" Thursday called. "Mind your feet. It's a little dark in here and there are things everywhere." She hadn't had her coffee yet, she wasn't very eloquent.

"I see that," Aravis remarked. "Is it always like this?"

Dawn opened the door tentatively and walked in. She didn't have any classes and was looking for something new and different to...whoa. "Wow. Um, do you need help?"

"Oh dear." Karal stopped just inside the door of the library, looking around with great concern. "May I help? At all? Please? All these books."

"Usually it's quite organised. The school blew up the weekend before last and I haven't been able to get in here since to see the damage. I'm Thursday Next, the new librarian. Are you a new student?" She didn't know everyone, but she thought she could at least recognise them.

Aravis nodded. "Aravis Tarkheena," she said, dropping a quick curtsy. "Delighted to meet you. I intended to do some research, but...it appears quite impossible. Do you need some help?"

"Hello Dawn," Thursday called. "If you're offering. There's plenty to do, but don't feel obliged to."

"If you don't mind shifting things out of the way. But research, you said? What were you looking for?"

Thursday was a little amused at the kindred spirit who hated to see books in such disarray. "You're more than welcome to join in. I'm not entirely sure where everything is meant to go yet, but help yourself to a pile if you'd like to help tidy. Are you a new student?"

"Do you know what steroids are?" Aravis asked. "Apparently they're a type of drug, but it came up in conversation, and I should like to know more about their effects." This would not happen if people simply told her things. "I am not of this world and had never heard of them."

"Yeah, sure, of course, Professor Next," Dawn said, picking up the books closest to her and putting them onto a table, "I don't have any workshops today, so I have plenty of time. Where do you want me?"

Before his workshops, Sam decided to check in on the library. He knew it was still standing, but he hadn't been able to get in to take a closer look yet. When he came inside and saw the mess, he stares and sighed audibly. "I really hate aliens."

"I am, yes. Very new." He smoothed his robes down and picked away across the floor. "Is there a method of categorisation? I'm not from this world, so the ones I'm familiar with aren't going to be much help."

"Steroids are drugs, yes. They enhance the physical characteristics of a person. I'm sure there's a book on the subject, but until we get this all sorted out you might be best trying one of the encyclopaedias for an overview. Those are easy enough to find. The clinic in town might also be able to help you with the medical side of things."

"I was just curious," Aravis said. "I don't really require any sort of extensive knowledge." She knelt and picked up one of the large volumes that Thursday had indicated, and found the 'S' section.

She flipped through, past wildly unfamiliar words, until she found the entry she believed to be correct. She scanned the article, reading softly to herself. "A steroid is a terp...I've no thought as to what that might mean. Aha! Cumulative steroid use can result in decreased size of --"

Aravis shut the book very quickly, her eyes wide and her cheeks red. She carefully replaced it, and said, "I think perhaps I've seen enough of that particular volume. Where can I help?"

"I don't suppose you know of any lanterns in the area?"

"They're not all bad, just the ones that want to shoot you. You're looking a sight better than you were at the church."
