Firearms and You #1 (Monday Period 1)

The Danger Shop was set up like an outdoor target range. Off to the side was a table set up with the sign-in sheet, several handouts, and an urn of coffee.

"Good morning," John greeted the class. "Welcome to Firearms and You. What you should come away from this workshop with is the knowledge of how to take care of and fire various types of guns and the confidence to know when, and more importantly when not to use them.

"You've picked up two handouts; the first one is a general overview of firearms, the history and different types, a number of which you'll have a chance to try out in this class. The second is about gun safety. I expect you all to read it and follow the rules it lists. Not doing so will have consequences ranging from detention to being asked to leave the range for the rest of that class -- or longer for repeated violations." John paused and looked around, trying to figure out which would be the ones most tempted to break the rules. "We're not dealing with toys here and I expect you all to treat the guns as the weapons they are.

"Now for this first session, I'd like to get to know you and what experience you already have. So we're going to go around and have each person give their name and, if you feel capable, step up to the range and demonstrate what you can do. The computer will provide whatever weapon you ask for." He paused. "'I don't have experience' is a perfectly acceptable response."

John looked around and smiled. "So who is going first?"

[ooc: wait for OCD's up. Have at it.]

Luke walked a little nervously up to the range. "Um, blaster, please," he asked the air. It materialized next to him.

He held it in his hands with the ease of long experience and fired three bulls-eyes at the target, then gave John a worried smile. "Like that," he said.

Luke beamed. "Uncle Owen would've been disappointed if I couldn't hit something that wasn't even moving," he said.

Abigail watched Luke, but was still surprised when she went up to the range, said, "Compound bow," and one materialized next to her.

After taking a minute to familiarize herself with the weight of the bow, she fired three arrows, all of which landed within the bullseye.

"Winchester rifle," Jo said, because she was occasionally just a bit of a dork.

She lined up her shot and and fired three bulls-eyes. She may or may not have been visualising the Vice-Principal's rump in front of the target.

Jo grinned. "Most people who stop by the roadhouse say they're excellent shots."

Yeah, dork.

When Abigail asked for a bow, Peter grinned.

He stepped up to the range. "Recurve bow, please." He checked the draw before firing then nocked his arrow.

The first two shots were slightly off center, but the third went into the bullseye.

"Nine millimeter handgun." Billy said, stepping up. When it appeared, he fired three shots. The aim on the first one was a little off, but the next two were almost bullseyes.

"Blaster, please," Z requested. "SPD-issue." The blaster materialized in her hands, and she fired off three shots. The best that could be said for them was that Z could probably hit the broad side of a barn, but just barely. She winced at her performance.

Eve stepped up to the range, requested a handgun -- nothing overly showy, nothing fancy, just a decent handgun that could put a bullet through something. And when the gun materialized, she took it and made a point to eject the clip, check it, and slam it home before taking aim and putting one shot right through the center of the target and the other two damn close to it.

Chris stepped up and requested the handgun that Parker had been teaching him on. He went through all the safety checks she had taught him and fired off a clip.

He grazed the bullseye once, the rest of his shots were pretty scattered.

Dawn stood and looked at the guns, but had a little trouble bringing herself to pick one up.

When Andros stepped up to the computer he said, "Auto Blaster,". He picked it up and fired a few good shots at the intended target.
