Firearms and You #1 (Monday Period 1)

The Danger Shop was set up like an outdoor target range. Off to the side was a table set up with the sign-in sheet, several handouts, and an urn of coffee.

"Good morning," John greeted the class. "Welcome to Firearms and You. What you should come away from this workshop with is the knowledge of how to take care of and fire various types of guns and the confidence to know when, and more importantly when not to use them.

"You've picked up two handouts; the first one is a general overview of firearms, the history and different types, a number of which you'll have a chance to try out in this class. The second is about gun safety. I expect you all to read it and follow the rules it lists. Not doing so will have consequences ranging from detention to being asked to leave the range for the rest of that class -- or longer for repeated violations." John paused and looked around, trying to figure out which would be the ones most tempted to break the rules. "We're not dealing with toys here and I expect you all to treat the guns as the weapons they are.

"Now for this first session, I'd like to get to know you and what experience you already have. So we're going to go around and have each person give their name and, if you feel capable, step up to the range and demonstrate what you can do. The computer will provide whatever weapon you ask for." He paused. "'I don't have experience' is a perfectly acceptable response."

John looked around and smiled. "So who is going first?"

Wyatt felt more comfortable with a sword in his hand instead of a gun, but he'd seen how useful they could be in Hunting 101, so he paid attention to the class.

John looked around the room, as he tended to get bored during lectures. He was surprised to see Lana in this class. John didn't think many cheerleaders would be interested in firearms.

Dawn fidgeted a great deal during John's lecture, but was determined to get over her fear.

"I'm Jo Harvelle," Jo said. "I know how to use most kinds of rifles, and shotguns, and a decent range of handguns. I'm a pretty fair shot with them too."

"I'm called Andros," Andros said, "I'm mostly experienced with an Auto Blaster, which I need to be familiar with as part of my training. I'm not actually familiar with any Terran firearms though,"

"I'm Chris Halliwell," Chris said. "And my experience with firearms is limited to what I learned in your class last semester and a couple of sessions with Parker at Gun Club, so I'm pretty much a beginner."

"I'm John Sheppard," John said. "I'm experienced in watching the use of firearms on television and movies."

"I'm Wyatt Halliwell," Wyatt said. "I don't have much experience with firearms other than what we learned in Hunting 101."

"I'm Tannim," Tannim said. "Ditto what Wyatt said. Pretty much everything I know about guns I learned in Hunting 101."

"Hi, I'm Lana Lang. I know a good deal about gun safety, but have only fired a gun once under very controlled conditions as part of a forensics test."

Luke smiled. "I'm Luke Skywalker and I practically grew up with a blaster rifle back home," he said, "since the Tusken Raiders don't take 'no thanks' as a valid choice. I've seen a lot of the weapons of the planet out at the gun range but I haven't had a chance to try out most of them."

"I'm Abigail Whistler," she said. "I'm familiar with handguns, but my experience with them has been limited, so my aim sucks a lot. Right now, I work better with other kinds of weapons."

"Peter Pevensie," Peter said with a nod. "I've only used guns in your class during fall term and workshops last summer."

"My name's Billy Kessler, and I've been trained with a nine millimeter hand gun, colt revolver, and an assortment of rifles. But I'm most familiar with the nine millimeter."

Z said, "I'm Elizabeth Delgado, um, call me Z, and most--okay, all--of my experience is with energy-based weapons. Blasters and the like."

"Eve Levine," Eve said. "And I'm pretty good at using most handguns. Not an expert or anything, but give me a gun, let me point it at my target, and I can hit it eight times out of ten." And the other two times still hit something on the target.

"I'm Bridge Carson," Bridge gives a little wave. "Weapons class back home mostly dealt with energy weapons when it came to guns, but I've also had a little experience with projectile weaponry from Hunting class in the fall."

"I'm Dawn Summers," she said, looking a little embarrassed, "and the only experience I've had with guns is the one that killed one of my best friends and almost killed my sister. But really, that was the bullet."

She paused. "I have some issues."

Luke walked a little nervously up to the range. "Um, blaster, please," he asked the air. It materialized next to him.

He held it in his hands with the ease of long experience and fired three bulls-eyes at the target, then gave John a worried smile. "Like that," he said.
