New Kid Registration and Check-In - Open Tent Outside the Dorms - All Day Friday

Well, the office was gone, but apparently that didn't mean that the office drones had time off. They were in an open tent outside the dorms processing new students bright and early on Friday morning.

It was a veritable paperwork conga line as the human-looking members of the staff did their thing, along with Fred Trooper, Bucky T. Squirrel, Venus, Bob Gremlin and Roz. You might even see the tech support kitten out and about, trying to keep the computers running. Robert Goulet had a family reunion to go to and couldn't make it.

Inara stood at the weapons table, debating whether some of her more choice botanticals counted as weapons. "What kind of place is this, that weapons aren't allowed?"

"A school," Fraser supplied. "You may keep weapons but they are not allowed in the dormitories and on the school campus. We supply a weapons locker for storage of all weapons."

"And what do you consider weapons?" Yes, this was a serious question.

"A weapon is any instrument or device for use in attack or defense in combat, fighting, or war, anything used against an opponent, adversary, or victim," Fraser recited. "And yes, I realize that is a broad definition but, for specifics, you'll have to tell me what you'd like to me consider."

"I have some botanical items that I mix into lotions and powders and oils," Inara said, then pulled a small stiletto out of...well, never mind where she pulled it out of, but she laid it on the table, smiling slightly at the man in the uniform, "but I believe this probably meets your definition."

"Yes," he said and tried not think about where that stiletto came from. "The botanical items you may keep with you, of course. The stiletto will be stored safely in our weapons locker."

Inara bowed respectfully, "Thank you very much. Are there procedures in place to retrieve it, should it become necessary?"

"The weapons locker is accessible to all students," he answered. "And the weapons are allowed to be used in designated areas."

"Which areas are those?" She asked, wondering if she'd also be able to locate some archery equipment or a fencing foil at some point so she could keep practicing.

"Currently, the gym area," he said. "When the school is rebuilt, the firearms range and salle will also allow weapons."

Inara took in the wreck and rubble, "May I ask what happened to the school?"

"We had a small alien invasion during our graduation ceremony," he said. "And they blew up the school before they were defeated."

"I'm sorry, did you say aliens?" Inara was starting to think she'd gotten on the wrong shuttle. "This is Fandom, correct?"

"It is," he said and smiled. "And I did say that, yes. They were just the latest in an assortment of...visitors we've had to the island."

"An assortment," she repeated, wide-eyed. "Do they all blow up the school?"

"No," he said. "This is the first time that's happened. And they were defeated. The school is going to be rebuilt as well."

"Won't that take months?" She asked, "And where will we be staying in the meantime?"

"It will take a bit," he said. "And the dormitories are still intact. For the summer, the students will be in cabins at our campground."

"Cabins?" That sounded very much not like a House. "In the wilderness?"

"Not entirely in the wilderness but with less amenities than our dormitories," he said. "They're very nice."

Inara swallowed the instinctive protest. This man was obviously in authority, and he knew what was best. "I'm sure they are," she inclined her head.

"If you have any trouble there, feel free to come find myself or another person in the administration," he offered.

"Thank you very much." She was ready to walk away when a final thought occurred to her, "Ah, since we won't be living in the dormitories for a while, should I move my things in there, or into the cabins?"

"Feel free to move your belongings into your room and take whatever you'd like to the cabins with you," he explained.

"Thank you again," she smiled at him, "and I'm sorry, I didn't learn your name. How rude of me."
