Fandom High Graduation Ceremony Class of 2007 Part I - Saturday Afternoon

The sun was shining high in the sky above the front lawn (not that this would matter to certain members of the audience since there was a nice awning and shaded pathways). A stage was set up with a podium and several seats for the administration and guests. Off to the side of the stage, a guitar for musical performances.

In front of the stage, blue and gold chairs were set for the largest graduating class in Fandom High history (not that it was a tough record to achieve), and to either side of those chairs were bleachers for students, family, friends, alumni, and residents of the town of Fandom who wanted to wtiness this event.

It was a beautiful day for a graduation.

"Not too ready to be forgiving of me, I'm guessing," Angel said. He looked Anakin over. "So how's it going?"

Anakin shrugged. "It's going. Some days are easier than others. Today? Is a good day. Aeryn's wearing a stupid hat."

"It's good that you're learning to appreciate the little things."

"I'd say it's all little things, but that's not true," Anakin said with a smirk. "I'm remembering how to smile again. Did you see Rory yet? She's valedictorian."

And that would be Anakin trying not to burst with pride.

"Took me centuries to work up to the little things," Angel said. "Consider yourself lucky. And yeah. She told me last night."

Angel didn't have to worry about hiding how proud he was of her.

"And she got into Harvard, Yale and Princeton," Anakin babbled happily. "She's got an amazing future ahead of her, where she can leave this weirdness behind her."

"Have a normal life, huh?" Angel said. Because boy did he have sympathy with that point of view.

"Exactly," Anakin said firmly. "She more than deserves that chance."

"No argument here," Angel said. "Big believer in that m'self."

"She doesn't want to believe me," Anakin said with a bit of a pout. "Do you have any suggestions?"

"Leaving town's about the only thing that worked for me," Angel said. "'course you're talking to a guy who's not exactly on good terms with his ex-girlfriends."

"I've only had the one," Anakin said, shaking his head, "but she'll be leaving at the end of the summer. Maybe I should just dodge her phone calls."

Because that's mature.

"It does keep things quiet."

Angel? Not mature.

"Bet she'd just yell at Luke about it, though," Anakin said thoughtfully. "And, Force, that boy can whine. I don't know where he gets it."

"I had the same problems with Spike," Angel said. "Not that he was my son, but man could he be an annoying buzz in the back of your ear."

"And when he thinks he's right..." Anakin shook his head. "He never lets go. He annoyed me back to the light. Well, sort of."

Angel couldn't help it. He snickered.

"How's that work?"

Anakin ran a hand through his hair. "It was mostly Rory, to be honest. She visited me every week, reminded me of who I used to be. Not that I wanted to remember, you know, at all. But then Luke...he looks like me but without all of the bitterness. And he was so convinced that I could just come back. Like it would easy. And I didn't want to break him of that kind of faith in people."

"Buffy looked at me like that," Angel murmured, halfway to himself.

Anakin gave him a small smile. "Then the bastard I was working for tried to turn my son into the human spark plug and that was enough for me to finally stand up and say no again."

"I get that," Angel said. "Somebody tried hurting my family or - "

Angel might've glanced in Logan's direction. It might've been a trick of the light too.

" - or somebody I cared about, I'd get really cranky."

Anakin gave Angel a grim smile. "That's always been my thought, too," he said. "It's what got me in trouble to start with, but it's kind of hardwired into me."

"Guys like us do better with 'hit a lot first, let somebody else do questions later'," Angel said.

"That's what Obi-Wan was for," Anakin agreed. "Except I didn't exactly talk to him about this." He bit his lip. "Thus starting the problem."

"Never really had a mentor," Angel said. "Unless you count Darla. 'course she wasn't so much a mentor as she was a real tiger in the - uh - yeah, so, lone wolf, would be my thing."
