fandomhigh | Fandom High Graduation Ceremony Class of 2007 Part I

The sun was shining high in the sky above the front lawn (not that this would matter to certain members of the audience since there was a nice awning and shaded pathways). A stage was set up with a podium and several seats for the administration and guests. Off to the side of the stage, a guitar for musical performances.

In front of the stage, blue and gold chairs were set for the largest graduating class in Fandom High history (not that it was a tough record to achieve), and to either side of those chairs were bleachers for students, family, friends, alumni, and residents of the town of Fandom who wanted to wtiness this event.

It was a beautiful day for a graduation.

Angel couldn't help it. He snickered.

"How's that work?"

Anakin ran a hand through his hair. "It was mostly Rory, to be honest. She visited me every week, reminded me of who I used to be. Not that I wanted to remember, you know, at all. But then Luke...he looks like me but without all of the bitterness. And he was so convinced that I could just come back. Like it would easy. And I didn't want to break him of that kind of faith in people."

"Buffy looked at me like that," Angel murmured, halfway to himself.

Anakin gave him a small smile. "Then the bastard I was working for tried to turn my son into the human spark plug and that was enough for me to finally stand up and say no again."

"I get that," Angel said. "Somebody tried hurting my family or - "

Angel might've glanced in Logan's direction. It might've been a trick of the light too.

" - or somebody I cared about, I'd get really cranky."

Anakin gave Angel a grim smile. "That's always been my thought, too," he said. "It's what got me in trouble to start with, but it's kind of hardwired into me."

"Guys like us do better with 'hit a lot first, let somebody else do questions later'," Angel said.

"That's what Obi-Wan was for," Anakin agreed. "Except I didn't exactly talk to him about this." He bit his lip. "Thus starting the problem."

"Never really had a mentor," Angel said. "Unless you count Darla. 'course she wasn't so much a mentor as she was a real tiger in the - uh - yeah, so, lone wolf, would be my thing."

"So was..." Anakin cut himself off. "I work better alone, too," he lied.

"Fewer people get hurt that way," Angel agreed.

"I don't get hurt that way," Anakin admitted.

"I... get that," Angel said. If Anakin hadn't already been through something like Angel had gone through, Angel probably wouldn't have been so willing to share. "Especially when nobody knows us as well as we do."

Anakin nodded. "I'm better off alone for the next...oh...sixty years."

"They don't let you do that around here," Angel said, a little sulky. "You can try, but folks come after you."

"Most of them are graduating," Anakin said hopefully. "Maybe the new crop will leave me alone."

"Could hide out with me," Angel offered.

Beat.

"Not on the same floor as Logan, obviously."

Anakin wrinkled up his nose. "He's still as charming as always," he said. "I ran into him yesterday at the beach. I didn't hit him!"

This? Was a major accomplishment.

"I appreciate that," Angel said. He hastily added, "The - uh - show of willpower. On your part. Which is a good sign."

Anakin was clearly not buying that. "Uh-huh."

Angel? So not good at covering for himself sometimes. "So. Nice day, huh?"

"I suppose so," Anakin said slowly. "What aren't you telling me?"

"...lots of things?"

Which had the advantage of being true.

"The Logan thing."

Anakin wasn't completely oblivious.

"He's in LA now," Angel said, though he knew full well Anakin knew that already.
