Tremble Foolish Mortals: The Gods and You, Class Fifteen [Period 5, Thursday]

Ares looked disturbingly happy as he addressed the class.

"Our final today is " He clicked his fingers and a portal appeared. "If you'd all follow me through the portal?"

As the class entered the portal, they may have felt an odd tingling.

Jack nodded. "You could pull it off, probably better than me, depending on how this time period works. I mostly meant that it's a one person deal. No getting other people out. Conversion's always an alternative, I guess," he offered and looked around the space, eyes skipping over the other students. "I wish we were armed. Yesterday's final? We got to be armed. I think I kind of hate Ares."

"I don't know if I'm persuasive enough to convert someone," Sam muttered, "and I know I do, so that's something I didn't know at the beginning of the semester. I'm just not sure it's progress."

Jack snickered, very quietly. "At least you'll remember him? That'll probably make him happy. You might even get an A." He sighed, shrugged, and leaned against a conveniently placed rock. "Totally not the time or place to go into it, but did you get my message?"

She snorted and kept watch on the guards, "Yeah, because that's my main objective, and yeah, I did," she said, without losing her focus on the guards' movements. "What happened?"

Jack followed her lead and shifted a little so he could watch behind them, eyes following guards and their fellow students. "Don't know. Ran into him on the way back from Caritas. He looked off, and he was very drunk. Figured you wouldn't want me leaving him on his own, so I got him to walk me back to the dorms." A quick smile came and went. "So I wouldn't get eaten by something nasty. Turns out Alanna got called home and they're not parting amicably."

"Well, shit," Sam glanced over at Charlie ~~if he was there~~ and swore more under her breath, "this is not the time for this, but I can't believe they ended badly. I just don't. He loves her too much."

"Yeah, he's not doing great." Jack shrugged one shoulder. "When we get back to the school, he could probably use some Sam time."

"I'll remember," she promised. "So, any ideas how we can make the getting back to school happen?"

"We go back if we survive, right?" Jack's ideas mainly involved using everyone else as a distraction, and then making a break for it, but he knew Sam wouldn't go for it. "So, don't die would be a start. Whatever we do is going to have to involve everyone or just us. And that's as far as my big plans go."

"I'd give good money for a zat," she grumbled, "and it might be easier to escape and come back with a real plan, after we've done recon."

"Not a bad idea." Jack eyed the guards, then glanced up at Sam. "Want me to see if I can get one interested? If he wants to get me alone, I guarantee I can distract him long enough to get a weapon." It had worked once before; he was confident he could do it again.

"No, I really don't," she told him, "but that doesn't mean it might not be our only option."

"So I'll file it under 'only if everything else doesn't work'," he said, resting his chin in his hand. "Seriously, once school's done? I'm never going anywhere without a gun ever again."

"That should make for some interesting conversations," she smirked at him.

Jack smirked back at her. "Something like: 'Why yes, that is a gun in my pocket, why do you ask' you mean?" he teased. "They make them tiny enough, no reason I can't have one with me all the time."

"Where are you going to keep it?" Sam asked without thinking.

Jack grinned. "Trust me, you really don't want to know."
