Monday, April 16, Period Two

A large projection screen decorates one wall of the classroom, and there's a nice assortment of pastries, muffins, popcorn and pretzels on the table in the center of the room.

"Good morning everyone. We were scheduled to have a test today, but I felt it was hardly fair to give you a test the week before finals. So instead, we'll be watching a film that's full of the classic fairy tale elements - The Ogre and the Ass ~~and it always said that omg~~. You'll probably recognize some of them from the stories we've read, although you'll find they've been turned a bit on their side. Please remember that next week you'll be making your project presentations, so I'll be available in my office tomorrow, or after class today, for any questions."

"Uh huh," Mia said, bouncing on Conner's knee. "Mummy and Daddy both play soccer and so do I. Daddy coaches an' runs soccer camps an' Mummy usedta play for the women's pro league until it wented away but now she plays for the English national team an' the new pro league!"

Pandora bounced a little. "I love soccer. Have you heard of a game called Pyramid?"

"You love soccer too? Yay!" Mia bounced too, then frowned. "Sometimes I hear Daddy on the phone talking to someone about it but that's all."

"I love soccer," Pandora said. "My daddy is teaching me to play Pyramid. You should come visit me and I could teach you."

Pandora? She was sure she had found a best friend.

"Really?" Mia glanced at Conner dubiously. "If Daddy lets me. I don't think he approves of sports that aren't soccer."

Pandora frowned a little. "Sports are sports, right?"

"You don't know my parents," Mia told her. "Soccer is life. Except Mummy calls it football. Which is different from the football that Daddy calls a sport for wimps."

Pandora cocked her head. "I'm not familiar with football. But I know soccer and baseball and pyramid. Daddy sometimes says Pyramid is life, too."

"Your Daddy sounds a lot like my Daddy," Mia decided. "Maybe they know each other!"

Pandora tilted her head. "My daddy is Samuel Anders, but he hates his first name."

Mia started giggling. "He's the one my Aunt Marie hates so much!"

Pandora looked sad for a moment. "But why would anyone hate my daddy?"

"I don't know?" Mia frowned. "I love my daddy. But sometimes I think Aunt Kira wants to hit him over the head with her guitar."

Pandora grinned. "My Aunt Piper often thwaps my daddy."

"That's not very nice of her. Why does she do that?"

Pandora shrugged. "She sometimes says that Daddy makes silly choices and he gives in to my mommy a lot when no one else will."

"Does your Mummy have a face that she makes that your daddy can't resist?" Mia asked knowingly. "'cause my daddy has one like that, that works on Mummy."

Pandora nodded. "She has a pouty face and Daddy always gives in."

"And your aunt hits him for it? That makes sense, but it's still not very nice," Mia said thoughtfully. "Mommy and Aunt Kira can't actually hit Daddy 'cause he moves too fast."

"I think Daddy lets them hit him so he can watch Mommy be all happy and bouncy. They don't actually hurt him. Mommy would be mad if they did."

Mia scratched her head. "Your mummy likes watching your daddy get hit? Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeird."

Pandora shook her head. "No, Mommy likes getting her way and Daddy stops people from making her frown."

"Your daddy sounds nice," Mia decided. "My daddy's nice too."

"Nice Daddys are a very good thing."

"Uh huh." Mia bounced on Conner's knee and hugged his arm. "We should go play later."
