Ethics [Monday, April 16, 5th period]

Anakin was standing next to his desk watching a little girl in a pink hat coloring a picture.

He looked exhausted.

"Okay," he said when the students arrived. "This week we're scheduled to talk about the ethics of parenting. I didn't make the little ones appear!" he said quickly. "I was going to give you egg babies instead."

He pointed at the crate of eggs on his desk. "So you're still getting paired up because it's your final project for class, but I'm sure many of you have more insights on this area than you would have, oh, say, Saturday." He smiled wryly. "And I'm guessing a life of celibacy is looking fairly appealing."

He pulled out a list of names. "Anyway. Here are your parenting teams. Take an egg, name it, give it a backstory, and bring it back in one piece this time next week. Listen for your name, then pair up and chat.

Marco and Molly
Katara and Sam
Balthier and Turtle
Irulan and Dean
Walter and Valentine
Jake and Blair
Kaoru and Neil
Draco and Steerpike
John and Jaye."

Anakin smiled. "So...anyone have stories to share?"

"Yes. I'm sure," Walter said, pulling a marker out of his book bag. "Unless you really want to fail this project."

"How badly do you want to pass," Valentine mused, still looking at the egg. "Because... eggs are food. Kids are not eggs. Kids, therefore, are not food, and that egg most certainly is."

"I don't care if I pass or not." Walter couldn't help rolling his eyes at Valentine's logic. "I'm leaving soon. But there are eggs in the common room kitchens. Why fixate on this one?"

"Because this one is right here," Valentine stated, looking the egg over, and then sighing. "So it's a convenient little snack. But I suppose I could keep the thing from breaking for the week. If I have to." He frowned at the egg, then looked up at Walter. "How are we going to do this, then? In shifts?"

Because if we are, I'm getting lost in the preserve tonight and probably won't be able to get the egg back to you or from you until I am set free again. We could coordinate a swap via voicemail, though, if you'd like.

"Shifts sounds right. I have... a daughter here right now." Which meant that there was a good chance that Walter would just put the egg in the refrigerator in his rooms. "Do you want to take the egg first or shall I?"

Voicemail swap is fine.

"I'll take the egg, I guess," Valentine said, eying the little thing. "Children and breakables seldom go together, after all."

Excellent. Thanks!
