"I know of him," Sam said, "and I have class with him, but I don't know him very well beyond that. Why do you ask?"

"Oh, just sort of an independent study thing I'm working on. I was just wondering if maybe you remember any books he might have checked out, what he was reading, that sort of thing." Annette thought that was something Sam probably couldn't tell her, but she was trying nevertheless. When next she met with Nadia, she wanted to have something concrete to report.

"I don't know if I can just hand over that kind of information, even if I can find it," Sam said. "But from what I know of him, I'm pretty sure he hasn't been wandering around the romance section."

She laughed lightly at that and just shook her head, "No, I wouldn't imagine that romance is his thing. But thanks anyway, Sam." Annette was sorry she couldn't explain further her reasons and hoped Sam didn't think too much into why she was asking about Steerpike.

"See you around." Smiling and with a little wave, she headed out.

"Sorry I couldn't be more help," he said sincerely, waving back at her as she left. If she didn't want to tell him why she was asking about Steerpike, that was fine. But that didn't mean he wouldn't be keeping a curious eye out himself now.
