Ethics [Monday, April 2, 5th period]

"Today we talk about the ethics we encounter in relationships," Anakin began quietly. "Not just the easy questions like 'is it cheating if one of us is possessed?' but the ones that effect everyone--how much of the truth do you tell the person? What happens when one of you stops loving the other one? What happens when you reach an impasse on differences in religion or life goals? What do you do when circumstances beyond your control threaten to split you apart? What if there's too much old baggage to try again?"

He ran a hand through his hair, not looking at John or Molly assuming they're in class today. "Take it from me. Sometimes love isn't enough to make it work." He looked around the classroom. "Today we talk about the messy parts of love. Pick one of my questions and answer it the best way you can."

He leaned against his desk. "I'll be over here brooding listening to the discussion."

"Love isn't stupid," Sam said. "Love is awesome, and if it gets messy, that just means you have to fight harder to make it work."

"Yeah, but what's the point? Who actually wants to go through all that bleeding heart, made-for-TV movie love drama? If I ever do fall in love, I don't want it to be anything like that. I want it simple. Too much other stuff to have to worry about."

"I don't think love needs to be the schmoopy bleeding heart kind. But I also think that eventually, every relationship gets a little messy. Inevitably, one of the people involved will do something seriously stupid."

Turtle's mouth shifted a little, thoughtfully in a frown, as she tried not to think about certain standstills reached between her and a certain kiss-and-run boy... "You really think it's that inevitable? I mean, yeah, everyone makes mistakes, but don't you wanna strive to not make them instead of believing something like that, which is pretty much just asking for something seriously stupid to happen? Murphy's Law and all that."

"Oh, I definitely think people should try not to screw up," Sam replied. "But it's been my experience that girls and guys don't always speak the same language, so it's likely for someone to screw up and not even realize it. When that happens...I don't know, I just figure that if you're really in love, you'll work to make things better before just scrapping the whole relationship."

"Yeah, but is love a good enough reason to put up with trying to make things better if they can't get better? Makes me think about my parents, and how they're from, like, two different worlds, and they don't even seem to like each other, but they still stick with things because they feel they have to or something, and just hope that me and my sister don't notice. But we do. And it pisses me off because I think it's bull. No one's benefiting, it just seems like an endless cycle of suck and misery."

"I think in the case of your parents, love might not even be in the equation. Um, no offense," he added quickly. "But if you say they don't even like each other, then they might not be in love anymore either. In which case, staying together for you and your sister probably does more harm than good."

"Exactly! But they still do it, because they cling onto the same ideas about love that you and about eight seven percent of the whole frickin' world believe, blindly, delusionally. I just don't think 'love' immediately equals 'common sense can go right out the window, thanks.'"

"Hey, I don't think love makes you lose all your common sense. I'm in love with my girlfriend, and we manage to maintain common sense most of the time," Sam argued. "And I'm not so far gone to believe that people can't fall out of love just like they fell in. I just think people should work a bit before they give up."

"A bit, sure," Turtle could agree to that much, "but some people just let themselves go through way too much on account of love. And I guess I probably do sort of draw the line, or, well, would draw the line if I ever were to fall in love, a little sooner than most people. But I'm not taking crap from anyone, even if I do love them."

"Nothing important's ever simple," Dean pointed out. "You can't run away whenever things get messy."

Re: Answer a discussion question!

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2007-04-02 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think that's bullcrap," Turtle admitted bluntly. "Breathing's important. That's pretty simple. And it isn't running away, so much as cutting your losses. If something's only causing you trouble and pain and difficulty, you're better off without it."

Re: Answer a discussion question!

[identity profile] saltandammo.livejournal.com 2007-04-02 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"You've never been strangled if you think breathing's always simple," Dean said. "And I don't buy that just because something's hard, it's not worth it. Hell, if I subscribed to that, I'd have blown off my family years ago."

Re: Answer a discussion question!

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2007-04-02 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Turtle rubbed her forehead with her palms a little in frustration. "I'm not saying that just because something's hard, it's not worth it. Stock market? Definately not easy, and that's why I like it. And family is different because family is important, and suffering through crap for them mean something. But I think that, for a romantic interest, it isn't worth it. Maybe it's because I'm young but jaded. Maybe it's because I've never been in love, but the whole thought of putting up with some of the crap that comes with an overly dramatic relationship? So not worth it. Not when you don't need to. You can't chose who your family is, but you can chose who you want to be with."

Re: Answer a discussion question!

[identity profile] saltandammo.livejournal.com 2007-04-02 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're right," Dean told her. "You haven't been in love if you think you can choose who you fall for."

Re: Answer a discussion question!

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2007-04-02 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Turtle's head ceremonially hit her desk. "I'm not saying that you can choose who you fall for," she said. "But you can always choose how you act about it. If you're putting yourself through hell and back again all for the sake of love, then, I'm sorry, you're an idiot. If anything, then you're using love as a reason to stay weak. It takes more to turn down something that's not good for you if you love it, but, you know what? It's still not good for you. People can get over love. It's just that most people don't want to, because it's so much easier to just place the blame on love so they don't have to look at themselves and see how big of an idiot their being!"

Turtle was starting to get really heated in the this whole thing now, realizing how much people pissed her off sometimes.

"Oh sweetheart, love makes idiots out of everybody," Dean told her. "Kinda comes with the territory. And even if you avoid love totally, you're not going to get through life not being an idiot at least occasionally."

Re: Answer a discussion question!

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2007-04-02 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Turtle grunted. "If I'm ever that much of an idiot for love, I want someone to just shoot me in the head."

"How about we just say 'I told you so'?" Dean suggested.
