Ethics [Monday, April 2, 5th period]

"Today we talk about the ethics we encounter in relationships," Anakin began quietly. "Not just the easy questions like 'is it cheating if one of us is possessed?' but the ones that effect everyone--how much of the truth do you tell the person? What happens when one of you stops loving the other one? What happens when you reach an impasse on differences in religion or life goals? What do you do when circumstances beyond your control threaten to split you apart? What if there's too much old baggage to try again?"

He ran a hand through his hair, not looking at John or Molly assuming they're in class today. "Take it from me. Sometimes love isn't enough to make it work." He looked around the classroom. "Today we talk about the messy parts of love. Pick one of my questions and answer it the best way you can."

He leaned against his desk. "I'll be over here brooding listening to the discussion."

"Yeah, but is love a good enough reason to put up with trying to make things better if they can't get better? Makes me think about my parents, and how they're from, like, two different worlds, and they don't even seem to like each other, but they still stick with things because they feel they have to or something, and just hope that me and my sister don't notice. But we do. And it pisses me off because I think it's bull. No one's benefiting, it just seems like an endless cycle of suck and misery."

"I think in the case of your parents, love might not even be in the equation. Um, no offense," he added quickly. "But if you say they don't even like each other, then they might not be in love anymore either. In which case, staying together for you and your sister probably does more harm than good."

"Exactly! But they still do it, because they cling onto the same ideas about love that you and about eight seven percent of the whole frickin' world believe, blindly, delusionally. I just don't think 'love' immediately equals 'common sense can go right out the window, thanks.'"

"Hey, I don't think love makes you lose all your common sense. I'm in love with my girlfriend, and we manage to maintain common sense most of the time," Sam argued. "And I'm not so far gone to believe that people can't fall out of love just like they fell in. I just think people should work a bit before they give up."

"A bit, sure," Turtle could agree to that much, "but some people just let themselves go through way too much on account of love. And I guess I probably do sort of draw the line, or, well, would draw the line if I ever were to fall in love, a little sooner than most people. But I'm not taking crap from anyone, even if I do love them."
