Lana came in and handed her pass (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomtownies/1550420.html?thread=69401428#t69401428) to Rory. "Hi, Rory. Mr. Phale gave me this so I could go into Special Collections and look for information on a prophecy."
"Oh, okay," Rory said, looking at the note. "That should be in the less dangerous part and closest to the door, so you might not need me to go with you unless you want. Have you been back there before?"
Lana shook her head. "I've never been in there, no, so I'm glad to hear I'll be in the safer part." She hesitated. "I think I'll be okay though. Is there anything I should know?"
Rory pulled out a pair of dragonhide gloves. "Wear these the whole time, don't go wandering off on your own, and don't touch anything except the book you need to. Seriously, no matter what, don't wander off. It's really easy to get lost. This should be in the section straight to the right after you go through. If the lights go out or anything like that, leave SC immediately, okay?"
"Thanks." Lana took a deep breath and headed inside carefully.
She didn't know how long she'd been in there before she found it. Special Collections felt strange - almost as if it was alive - and time didn't seem to run quite normally. She knew the book was the one she'd been looking for as soon as she found it, though she couldn't have explained why that was.
She pulled it off the shelf and sat it down on the table to look at it. It seemed to be a spellbook of some kind, belonging to the Countess Isobel Theroux. Lana hesitated, touching the raised design on the cover, and then, even though she knew she shouldn't, she slowly stripped off the dragonhide gloves.
She reached out one careful finger to trace the design, but the moment she touched it, everything seemed to explode in blinding yellow-white light and Lana knew nothing else.
Rory wasn't looking when Lana came wandering out of Special Collections in a smiling daze. She glanced up and took the gloves from her, though, glad to see that the library hadn't eaten the other girl.
She spent seventh period cleaning up the library and doing her actual job before she headed into town in search of caffeine and the possibility of other nourishment.
